Server has a corrupt transaction log. Potentially a ten-second fix but these things are tricky and we won't do anything without a plan B in place. Not on this machine...

We're back. Looks like we encountered a little-known bug in PostgreSQL 7.3.3. Upgraded to 7.3.4, abused a few config files and it's looking alright.
