Question Google on Status monitor

May I know why the google.com has been listed under Deepmetrix Ipmonitor at http://status.vortechhosting.com:8080/

yeah, it is interesting and also confusion for those who use the server status script which extract data from this this IPMonitor and publish in their site!

It used to see if there is any router issues from inside out.. IPmon 7 is coming out soon. We are looking to upgrade here soon we are also looking at a better monitor system called IPCheck, it would give us everything IPmon does plus full SNMP to where it can track CPU, Memory, IIS Connections, Disk Space and such.

I thought the ipMon box was supposed to be external anyway?

It use to be, but because of some of the stuff we now blocked at the firewall we moved it in house. Plus it cut some wasted bandwidth outside to inside. Does not make much difference if its on the outside or inside. If its outside and you see its all read or if its in side and you can't get to it because the main routers go out. Kind of the same thing really.. Its still down..

Not really Brad, its not just "us" theres many folks using that for their customers as well and I'm sure they'd much rather see it red than not see it at all, its a case of at least being able to see whats wrong even if you can't do anything about it. It would also help assist with firewall problems regarding ports becuase it would highlight problems. ipMonitor shouldn't need any extra ports open that aren't already open for customer use anyway that I can think of (I stopped using it about a year ago on the networks I manage but can't remember anything special being required to be opened).

The servers should have dependancies on the router anyway so they'd technically stay green if the router was out.

The forum should also be external as well preferably, the techs may not be able to access it then if the routers down, but at least resellers could continue to communicate information and say nominate someone to get updates from Vortech by phone and post on the forum for everyone to read (this in theory should cut down the queries you get when theres a major network/router) problem.

Search the forums for ipMonitor will turn up some info, I think someone was selling a script also that "monitored" the monitor.

I have to agree with Brangwyn on this one. This should prevent as much panic when something goes out. If the board is down and the status is down for hours...which has happened, that leaves people in the dark for how long? If you then call..hopefully you will get someone on the phone who can enlighten you.

IPmon needs netbois open for us to get the full use out of it along with SNMP, we block both at the router. The new system we are looking at uses SNMP even more then IPmon.. I will see about moving it out side the network again, we can move the forums really easy over to the ticket system servers.

The thing I hate about doing that is we have to rent the systems and have no access. We have been looking as places here in orlando to open a 2nd DC but we are already in the best one, so its hard to find anything as nice.. There is one place we like that I might go back to again. I just hate renting systems where if the HD fails we can't work on it or have control over that system..

The only things I can initially think of that you might you need netbios open for is some of the QA checks that compare files, however that can be avoided by simply placing the files onto the ipMonitor box, and even if it really had to be open your firewall rules don't need to be wide open you'd restrict it by source IP, and use W2K's built in firewall to lock up the ipMonitor box from abuse.

Having SNMP open isn't much of an issue imo you'd only be one of another zillion where the public snmp pool could be viewed.

Personally I'd just be chucking it down on the cheapest server possible at ev1 or somewhere whilst keeping a backup copy of it on a machine within your own network so that if there was a failure you could just temporarily go back to using something internal whilst it was fixed

just my $0.02

Well I just found anther good DC here in orlando that we are going to use, so we will putting a status system over there to check the network in downtown orlando. So once we get that setup we should be good to go and will set up a box or just move the status box over to that DC.

I really just hate renting anything.. I like to own and be able to work on it my self if I need to.
