Have any of you experienced a rash of fraudulent purchases from Nigeria? A site I built and help manage (www.seemore.com) has been literally pounded with purchases that our now turning out to be unauthorized purchases with stolen card numbers. Does anyone have any thoughts or insight???

Yes, one of the sites i maintain (www.champions.co.nz) use to have this problem quite alot. We also received (and still do to some extent, not as much now tho) from some of the asian countries.

there were a few ways that we got around this.

Firstly we processed all transactions offline, as in the orders were checked, stock was checked and then it was charged when the order was ready to be delivered. this gave the chance to check where the order was from, the amount etc etc.

If the order looked a bit sus, then we would give them a ring... far better to loose $10 in a phone call than $400 to a bogus order (which is what happeded to champions once, before i was around i might add )

If the phone call is successfull then they would request that the money be bank transfured into our account. It may have been a hassle to the customer but they generaly didnt mind when we explained about the amount of fraud in their area.

Champions now have quite a spectaular back end to there websites shopping cart, which does order profiling and checks a whole range of things before the order is actually placed, and will rank the orders for the possibility of fraud.

A simple way of getting around all of this is to simply not include nigeria in shipping country list. The champions site has a few countries that are not included in there country list. you could then simply put a notice saying that your country isnt listed it is due to the amount of fradulent orders in that area and get them to contact you via email.

hmm hope that helps.

What always works for my client (metromotorsports.com) is that any suspicious orderer will be contacted to send a fax of the card. That way you can ensure that they own the card - this can of course be defeated, but for $400 most criminals will move on to their next victim.

Hey boot numlock I hope you don't think that you are safe now! My X hosting company it was ripoff and they are in TX I'm not going after them is not worth the trouble. The only way you MAY get your money is if the person is in your home town, your not along you just have to find a way to weed this orders.
You can do the same think we do and including Matrix request a photo copy of the credit card, drivers license and photo ID like passport
I hope this helps, you don't stop drinking water because you chocked once now do you?
Good luck
Tony
