webalizer.config file
I placed a webalizer.config file in my webalizer folder. It does not work. Question 1: Did I put it in the wrong folder? Question 2: What can I do to customize webalizer?
Thanks |

I'm pretty sure that can do exactly NOTHING to configure Webalizer. A lot of people have been asking for better stats (including myself) here and on the PSoft forum for months and months but nothing is ever done.

I know for sure that it is possible to make at least some adjustments to webalizer. I used to have a different hosting service and all I had to do was placing a webalizer.config file in the same folder. I moved the exact file over to Vortech and it is being ignored.
See the original text from http://www.webalizer.com Quote:
Can an Admin please aswer my question on how to do it on Vortech servers? Thanks |

We don't support using your own config but we will have some new stats for everyone here soon. We have to pick from LiveStats 6.0 ( windows only ) or Urchin ( Unix and Windows )

SurfStats
Admin: have you looked into SurfStats? A large hosting company I have worked with recently dropped LiveStats in favor of SurfStatsLive. It can do Windows and Unix logs...
http://surfstats.com This would make me a very happy customer...I do not even care if it is directly integrated into the CP.

Well it supports FTP for logs so it will work with any of our systems from what I see..
![]() I may have to have a vote on these 3 to see who likes what the best.. We would have to go with this version from the looks of it. http://surfstats.com/./sla_ent.asp Live seems to only support windows. This is the reason I lean to Urchin as it can support them all. I can't seem to find a demo for there Enterprise Edition so I may need to email or give them a call to make sure this is the right version for us.

Here is a live demo that I think is the Enterprise Edition running at MaximumASP (a high-end windows host):
http://demo.surfstatslive.com/MyIndex.asp I have several clients hosted there, and according to them, they switched to SurfStats instead of LiveStats due to customer complaints and downtime with LiveStats. So far my experience with SurfStats has been great. EDIT: According to this page, it also looks like the Live version will work with BOTH Unix and Windows server: http://surfstats.com/./ssl_service.asp Look at the diagram for Multi Server configuration options. If it is running on a dedicated machine "SurfStatsLive" collects log data from other web servers (all types.)

vonbrocklin faints in sheer delight into a heap underneath his desk. --> (After reviewing the Urchin demos my votes is for SurfStats ALL THE WAY!!! I even think it is considerably cheaper then Urchin if I am understanding their license page.)

I've been using Surfstats for years (back when it only cost like $14) it works well and product support is good too.

I think surfstats looks great. I use Urchin on another server and it's good too. But I would prefer surfstats all the way.
I'm in the process of moving some customers over to Vortech. I need an explanation why I can't customize webalizer any more and what the timeline is to get a better stats program. A good stats analyzer is the biggest selling point for me! Some enlightment, please??? Thanks |

The reason is this for webalizer, we would have to go in by hand on each domain to make changes. If the server had problems and we had to restore it we would have to do all the changes again.
So we tend not to change things that H-Sphere sets up so we can do restores easier and faster. As for SurfStats I will be calling them this week if I can find there number I could not find on there page yet but I did email them.

Any news on this topic?
I was surprised to read admin's reply that they would have to go into each domain to make changes. I thought you could use the configure file to give webalizer all kind of instructions. For example where to look for the config file. Quote:
I know this discussion is obsolete if we get something much better. But I'm really desperate to get a stats package that I can at least use for now. |

Update?
Any update for the addition of new stats features mentioned earlier in this thread? Anxious and can't wait.
Thanks Chris |
