vixen, no one was moving anyone's customer. The customer was moving themself. If they didn't want to switch, they wouldn't have changed the nameservers for their domain, would they?
In any case, this particular situation has come to a resolution between the parties. It does raise quite a few questions though. |

So what are your questions?

admin, its probably best just to let this experience go. The questions I had were basically addressed in the prior posts. With the number of resellers that you have, this situation is bound to come up again sometime in the future.
Thanks. |

I really don't see how this can come up much at ALL! Unless every site out there claiming to have a big datacenter and NOC is really a Vortech reseller, hrrrm, NO! There are THOUSANDS of hosts and many millions of customers, it might just be best to let this one go!

I think you missed the point of my post. What I was saying is, if the shoe were on the other foot and this person was originally YOUR customer and you had a reason for not letting them go BUT Vortech came in an deleted them so they could go to another reseller would you not be pissed?? I know I would be.

vixen, yes, I would be upset that I lost a customer. But say for instance, my customer opened a new hosting account with WasteofMoney Hosting. My customer then went to their registrar and changed their nameservers to ns1 & ns2.wasteofmoney.com .
Now, my customers domain points to someone else's server and their site is up, correct? It doesn't matter if I didn't want them to leave or not. They are the customer and owner of the domain and they can do what they want. |

So they could find all the Vortech Resellers and hop among them while leaving big debts due at each one at free will right?

They could do it at multiple hosts that are not Vortech resellers with no problem at all. They could run up a tab at abchost then change their hosting to defhost and do the same, then change to ghihost, etc, etc, etc. Why should it make a difference if some are resellers of the same company? |

EXACTLY!! At least someone is following my logic here. gadget - I think you should think about what I am actually SAYING instead of just looking at the fact that you got a new customer outta this. We deal with deadbeat customers EVERY DAY and let me tell you it is not fun. You are correct that they can go wherever they like but is leaving an unpaid bill with your previous host acceptable?? Not in the least. You can only imagine how many previous customers we have right now that have outstanding bills and just moved on. There was no one we could call up and say "Don't take them as a cutomer cause they owe us money." We are left to try and collect our funds ourselves and then as a last resort hand them off to an outside collection agency. That is why I think Vortech should not have been involved in this and it should have been settled privately.

Because Vortech has bills to pay too! And I am sure they want to protect their other resellers and their customer base from fraud as well. If they might have "inside" info on a customer because they "run up a tab" I want to know. No I don't want to know all the info about the customer, but I just want to know that that customer would not be a good one. Consider it like a credit check before getting utilities services.

I like how you think. We definitely do not want another hosting companies' deadbeats anymore than you would.

I agree with you that leaving an unpaid bill with the prior host is not acceptable. But, look at it this way, if I was just a random host that had a new customer change his DNS to my servers and signed up with me, and I was not a Matrix reseller, how would I know what that customer had left behind? I wouldn't. If approached by the old host, I would talk to the customer and try to help the old host out. But again, the ONLY reason this was a problem was because two hosting companies happened to share the same DNS servers. |

Everybody is assuming the worst case scenario that the client in question has some type of outstanding debt.. I don't believe thats true in this case though.
Now if that were NOT the case and a host was holding my account/domain hostage I would personally drive to their house and........ well use your imagination,, it wouldn't be pretty. __________________

Personally, we are not going to contact the new host to collect the debt because they have no reason to help us. That is the point I think you are missing. You had a third party to assist you, since you are a reseller. However, as an actual hosting company we do not have any third party to assist us. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, this should have been handled privately and Vortech should not have been included.

So Vixen, if had a site hosted with Yahoo Hosting and signed up directly with you for hosting instead, would you not accept me as a customer? Would you do background checks on my domain to see if I owed anyone money? Of course not. You would go ahead and set me up an account.
I would then upload my site to your servers. Now let's say I skipped out on Yahoo and didn't pay them the $100 I owed them. How would know that? You wouldn't. |
