"collaboratively edit" - i think this is the key here. To go back to my original question and to why? We have clients where we are recommending that they use Macromedia's Contribute for managing web content:

http://www.macromedia.com/software/contribute/

It's sort of a poor man's CMS. It's a great value, especially for small-medium size businesses with static sites. What sets it apart, however (for the price) is it's system for managing users and editors. It can connect to sites using FTP, or webDAV.

webDAV has better built in versioning control, and this is why I was asking.

Web Dav

Contribute is one of many answers as to why Webdav is needed.

Rather than "IMHO it is better...." kind of work around, since nobody really knows what those of us who want webdav are doing with it:

Can we hear some reasons not to have it? (Not "i don't do it that way so it must be the wrong way..." nor "THere is another way") IF there is a legitimate security concern speak up. Else please don't.

Ultimately, it's really up to Vortech whether to have it or not, and I'm glad there open is debate here.... but really webDAV is quite tame in terms any possible problems that it may bring if installed. I'm sure there's a heck of a lot more modules/components running right now that can do a lot more harm.

I mean, it's not some proprietary black magic technology, it's based on open standards (based on HTTP of all things! ). I don't think it's any more or less secured than FTP.

...so I suppose it all comes down to necessity (please Vortech correct me if i'm wrong). Maybe it's true that currently theres not as much a need for it, but I think theres enough of it to have it. And I think there will be more in the future, as it is a well-accepted protocol with plenty of support from the developer community.

There is a module called mod_dav available now for apache *nix

http://www.webdav.org/mod_dav/#how

It would have been nice to have this available.

One nice thing it that WebDav can be secured via https. You can also do this with FrontPage extensions, however we know how well FP exts work. WebDav has matured since this post was originally started. Has vortech looked into webdav as an option? I have customers that want to use a secure method to transfer data to the server. FTP is not a viable solution.
