mail server dns question

Why is it that some of my sites, if i ping the mail server, they dns to the correct mail server (mail.strengdesign.com) and others dns to mail1.hsphere.cc?

shouldn't all the sites i created dns to mail.strengdesign.com?

did i mess something up? and more importantly, i think this is something that needs to be fixed--can i do it?

your dns zone strengdesign.com has aliases for mail and mail1. When you add a domain that domain's mail gets setup on which ever mail machine we have "turned on" for new signups. For a while its been mail1 but a few days ago we changed it back to mail as mail1 was getting full and mail is not very full at all.

Yes it sounds like you might not have it setup. It's in your Alias settings.

mail1.strengdesign.com seems to be valid from this side of the world

when you say

Quote:

This sounds to be like an RDNS related thing possibly ? Could you describe what your actually doing a little more ?

i have just had clients (and myself) with email issues and thursday vortech needed to reset the dns on my personal account. Then i started looking at some of my client accounts and was noticing some variance in the ping reporting. I am not very versed in this aspect of server management, etc. so i came here for a little guidance.

Sorry I'm still a tad confused what exactly are you pinging ?

If I ping mail1.strengdesign.com from here it seems to work fine correctly its going to 216.157.132.2 (mail1)

yeah that does work fine, but if you ping mail. it says mail1.hsphere.cc (same ip) I thougth that it should say...
pinging mail1.strengdesign.com

i guess it is not so much a technical issue as an aesthetic one...

as long as all mail works, i guess i don't care

bootnumlock, there must be a DNS PTR record, and sadly it can not have tons of replies(it can't distingush between requests, and if it coudl it would be SLOW), it will always be that, hsphere.cc is fairly generic.
