Data Backup and Recovery

A couple of my customers have asked about what kind of backup and data recovery systems are in place with this hosting, especially as it pertains to databases and dynamically uploaded files that I don't have a site backup. I was wondering what you have in place on the system (tape backup, data redundacy, etc.) What can I tell them?

We backup every windows servers every 24 hours.

Unix is done every 24 hours with one from the 15th and the 1st.

If something major happens to our client's info (hacked or human error) with no fault of Vortech's, is there a way to recover that data from your tapes? If so, how far back in time can we go and does it cost?

We no longer use tape as it just cost way to much..

As for unix you can go back 24 hours, 15 days and 30 days.

On NT we can go back 24 hours and 15 days.

To pull any back up is $60 per hour to pull from a back. The reason for this is to un qzip a huge file so it takes a lot of time and server load to to do. Most of the time 1 to 2 hours.. So its good to make sure you have 100% lost it before going that way.

What about database backups - MSSQL, PGSQL and mySQL ?

mySQL and msSQL would be under the unix backup.

msSQL would be under the NT backup.

Could you restore a single database easily, in case of a data problem as opposed to a machine problem?

Its all the same we tar ever thing up so no matter what we have to pull the full backup. But it can be done..

This kind of information is "good to know" stuff so a reseller has it handy to answer customer inquires.

May want to update the FAQ area ... it states:

How much are daily backups?
Answer:
Free we back up every H-Sphere server every 24 hours.

The "Free" gives the impression that there would be no charge.
