I am not saying it has to be r5, especially not on a web server, per se. And especially with logs. They can chew up things. Sure these choices have to be planned to suit Vortech's network also. I am saying that better redundancy that works needs to happen, because the hidden cost I feel is more. Heck raid1 or 0+1 has got to be doable. The same mess has happened too many times. Causing everyone's hair to fall out. Tape backups can also be a pain if thats the source for recovery.

Your user directory is a special case. Everyone else we can pretty much give a yes or a no. Yours appears to be in the backup volume, but it crashes the client when we try to restore. It is the ONLY one that does this. This is, of course, not your fault. If you have to have an answer now it would be no.

Retrospect will backup from virtually any OS, the "controller" needs to be a Windows or Mac box though.

Brad - we all learned a big lesson. Now, what you have done to avoid anything like this in the future? Backup systems at Vortec most of the time failed to produce good results and this is very much the high time you shop around for a better and more effective solution otherwise we are all great trouble!

BTW: my sites are still empty!

To backup unix you would ether need a client to connect to it or use samba right? I am sure they have a windows client.

We might just have to run one system for windows and one system for unix. This way we can use a windows app to backup windows servers. I am checking out Retrospect now along with a CA program I was looking at before. I think CS's back solution might be a bit better then Retrospect. But I am going to time and test both tomorrow.

Brad , CA's Brightstor Arcserve is one of the best backup solutions i have used.
Hope you can find the best solution soon, so that we can all rest with more confidence. This is the most seriuos incident i have seen here at vortech and hope we have all learned the lesson. Apart from a good and "tested" backup system, i think at least Raid1 on all servers is mandatory. Vortech has what most hosting companies lacks: "Great support, communication and sincerity". So don't let technology fades this attributes. Sure you won't. Go ahead!

A client gets installed on every server you wish to manage your backups from, the backup Server is then installed on a windows or mac box, basically all it does is manage your backup sets, clients etc and schedule the backups .. you can backup straight to your NAS that should work ok and like any good software it does incremental snapshots as well.

I'd say just download the 30 day trial and have a play with it, nothing spent, nothing but a little bit of time lost if you don't like it. Personally I find it great, there are SQL Agents for it as well, it will back up over a network with very little impact to the machine it's backing up from.
