Unix10 12/24/04

Unix10 is down and not responding. I'm heading downtown to check it out. More will follow.

Unix10 appears to be suffering from a hardware problem. I've brought it back here for James to look at when he gets here shortly.

I have a shopping cart site on unix10 and I've got 4 clients yelling at me on Xmas, for orders not processing...what the hell is going on. I demand some explainations.

We're depending on your servers as you say " just another way of making sure we're maintaining stability" This is absolutely ridiculous. What is UNIX10 just some barebone whitebox with a gigabyte board, a couple of 80GIG IDE's, and 256Ram? you pulled the box for someone to look at? Where's the redundancy?

Thanks a lot I just lost a 40 a month account.

I'm demanding restitution on this.

I've been real patient for 2 years during your outages and growing pains period and never asked for any restitution. I donated 200 this to toys for tots. I patiently wait for tech support and don't gripe much at all.

But this is the final one with this UNIX 10 server bull crap. In fact I would like to know what your server inventory schedule is? I would like to know what's in your servers? I'm sure that others would too? Where's the redundancy on this?

Once of the network ports on the server died. Due to the way Hsphere handles netowrking ( It adds all fo the IPs to a server AFTER the server boots.) Hsphere had added the IPs to the backup NIC. But it didnt add the ROOT IP. The problem, and hence the downtime, came from having to sort through the 250 odd IPs on the server to find which IP wasnt there. Once this was discovered the server was back online. This was exasperated by the fact that only one person was on duty due to X-Mas. Thus is took longer to detect this.

From the time I was contacted till the server was up was roughly an hour to an hour and 10 minutes. I am not sure of the time it dropped out exactily though It was back online at roughly 12:20AM.

Due to not wanting to tear the server down I will give only limited specs.

Tyan Dual Xeon server board with 2 gig ECC SDRAM (Infineon) (Board supports 8Gb) (We have used various model numbers. Not sure of this one without tearing the box down.

Dual 2.40Ghz 512Mcache XEONs

1 X 15K RPM 36GB Seagate Cheatah HD (SCA)

400W PS (Not sure of brand)

Any More specific questions?

Rick, I appreacite your frustration, but taking it out on the guys trying to fix things just isn't going to help matters at all. Hardware breaks down it's a fact of life, and it doesn't give a hoot if its Christmas or any other day of the year. Vortech do use pretty high quality gear if they didn't we'd be seeing outages a lot more frquently than we do but even the best gear money can buy still quits on ya sometimes and it doesn't help when the problems compounded by software like it sounds it was in this instance.

Post removed. Brangwyn covered it nicely, as usual.
