Out Going Mail On Matrix mail Server
What do I do to enable outgoing mail on an email account I have set up on one of my Matrix Accounts? When I try to send mail using the account from my pc(using Outlook) I get an error stating something about "relay" having to be enabled. Incoming mail works fine.
Thanks in advance |

Outgoing mail uses SMTP Authentication. In Outlook, this is the "My outgoing mail server requires authentication" option. Its NOT SSL.

To enable SMTP Authorisation in most popular mail clients:
Outlook Express: 1) Select 'Tools' -> 'Accounts' from the menu. 2) Highlight your account. 3) Click on the "Servers" tab. 4) Check the box that says "My Server Requires Authentication" for the "Outgoing Mailserver". 5) Click "Settings" and ensure "Same as Incoming" is selected. Outlook: 1) Select 'Tools' -> 'E-mail Accounts' from the menu. 2) Select 'View or change existing e-mail accounts' and then press next. 3) Highlight your account and select change, or double click on the account. 4) Click on "More Settings". 5) Click on the "Outgoing Server" tab. 6) Check the box that says "My Outgoing Server (SMTP) Requires Authentication". 7) Ensure the "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected. Eudora: 1) Select 'Tools' -> 'Options' from the menu. 2) Select "Sending Mail". 3) Check "Allow Authentication". |

Does your isp block smtp from other mail servers? Example for Cox cable you must use their smtp server to send mail.

Since none of the solutions above don't work and I haven't figured out what to do, I am beginning to think that Road Runner(Time Warner Cable) indeed blocks outgoing smtp mail. Does anyone know this for sure? |

call your cable company's tech support and they will tell. I know they block port 80. Try switching the smpt settings to your road unner smpt setting and see if it works

I use RoadRunner and have for several years. I don't even know what our RoadRunner email account's userid/password is because we've never used it. We're in Houston on Warner Cable so it is possible that some other citeis have smtp blocked. |

you shouldn't need the road runner password and userid.
in outlook open upo the account settings for the email account in trobule Enter smtp-server.houston.rr.com in the Outgoing Mail Server field instead of the current one. Uncheck authentication. smtp-server.houston.rr.com http://www.help.rr.com/getpage.asp?/...s.asp,selfhelp |

I don't use the email account that came with our RoadRunner service, never have and never will. I have no RoadRunner account setup in any email program on my Windows, Apple or PocketPCs to access it because I don't plan on using it.
My reply had to do with the question of whether RoadRunner blocked smtp servers other than their own. In my case they do not and if they did I'd be finding another broadband service. |

this is the answer for your question 90% of the time. you would be using there server not an email account

I didn't have a question. I was answering the question of ixie02:
" that Road Runner(Time Warner Cable) indeed blocks outgoing smtp mail. Does anyone know this for sure?" RoadRunner/Time Warner Cable at least in Houston does not block SMTP. |

Road Runner, to my knowledge does not block SMTP (not in Columbus, or Orlando)
Also, if they were blocking smtp you wouldn't get a relay error message you'd get a message that you couldn't connect to the server at all. That message sounds like smtp authentication isn't on. (because basically it would be trying to send a mail message without authenticating) |

Actually the error to me sounds a little like your trying so send an email from a domain that isn't hosted by Vortech, are you sure the domain name after the @ in the from address of the email is a valid vortech hosted domain ?

To my knowledge RoadRunner does not block SMTP. Try checking their help section (rr.com).
