Microsoft Outlook

Howdy All:

Looking for some help from this friendly community! I am going to be reloading my PC from scratch, cause I have to much stuff on it, and well, to be honest, I cannot figure out what is wrong with it.

Many programs will not run, and stuff, so, I figure it is time to take Windows to the trash and reload it! It has been a good run, almost 27 months!

Anyway, I have my e-mail stored in outlook as well as my address book. Does anyone know how to back this up? I think I have done the address book before, but what about my mail?

Any suggestions are better than where I am now.

Thanks,

The files storing the mail data are defaulted to "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook"
File>Import/export will allow contacts to be backed up....

I find it easiest to export to a "pst" personal folder file.

Be sure to check the checkbox for include all subfolders.

Then on the new install, file|import from pst. Works like a charm.

things to remember and what I do to avoid problems:

I never load freeware, test scripts etc on my work box, I always try them out on a second older box.

I dont let anyone else use my computer.

I keep virus protection up to date.

I buy a new computer every year.

Everything should be stored in the .pst file actually, just search for *.pst and take a copy of that, shouldn't normally need to do any exporting etc, if you have a recent version of outlook it even stores your mail rules in there as well too so they are also preserved.

That is really good news, recreating all my rules would be a project in itself...

amen, it's one reason I run exchange locally actually then I can have the rules server side

Peter .pst only applies to Outlook, not outlook express. You may also need to search "Hidden Files and Folders".

Outlook Extress has its' files residing in a similar path to this by default: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{1D1fredC8-5BFB-4E19-86DF-FF284Bfred}\Microsoft\Outlook Express"

Unfortunately that's just for mail Peter. Here's a good article on how to backup everything else though.
