Yesterday I was updating a site, I wanted to changed few things on the home page and optimize for the search engines so I searched Google for a position and checked the Cached page they have just so I know what they consider important. I was trying different versions of the page.

I went back to Google to see what the other sites have for keywords when I found out my site disappear, poof, gone! For my luck Googlebot went by at the same time I was working on it. Later on at 02.00 am the page it was back at Google only now it dropped by 20 pages.
I guess I better not by any Lottery tickets!

That's some terrible luck Tony. Hope you're able to work your way back up the rankings. Is it possible that the changes you made negatively impacted your ranking?

It's also possible that Google penalizes sites for downtime. I know they're really protective of their algorithm, but does anyone have any other circumstantial evidence one way or the other?

you can make yourself crazy over stuff like that. If you don't do anything your ranking can change for no reason, at all.

Well the changes I made the didn't do it, cause all this happen in real life while I was working on it, I had one screen with the Google’s page open and one with my site and I was using Google’s results for reference when this happen. I thought you are doing some thing wrong Tony, so I refresh the screen nothing, searched again nothing, this is when you don’t know if you want to kick your self or try to fix what wasn’t broken to begin with, so I picked the later.
The spooky thing is this all happen right in a front of my eyes, I was thinking the same thing Curt, now you did it Tony.
However, I think it was just bad timing the good thing is this afternoon the site moved up witch is good the other good think is, I’m still in the same position on all the other search engines. I was giving up on Google any way, they play to many games just so they can created this hype we all have witness lately.

Google has 10 or 12 sites for serving pages. It's not uncommon for them to be testing algorithm changes on one or a few sites and not on the others, So depending upon the site you are directed to, you may get different results.
