Good Day Everyone at Vortech,

It has been quite sometime since I have posted, generally I do not have any issues, and that is probably why I do not post all that often. My last post was in reference to Microsoft Frontpage and I never did get a response, that did bother me just a LITTLE bit. So, here I am reposting to get a better definitive answer.

In the past I have been told that due to security issues with MSFP, that Votech has limited several options that an everyday user can do with FP, such as set permissions on folders in order to make a protected area. Now, I do not know much about this, as I am not a fan of FP. However, I have a customer who hosts two sites with me (now at another host) because he needed these options made available to him. Vortech had previously advised that if I open a trbl ticket they will set the permissions for the folder, however, then that means my client has to open a ticket with me and he does not have the control of the website that he wishes to maintain. Is this still the case?

I have also been told that this is a secuirty issue with H-Sphere. I am currently with two hosting providers (spending more than I would like too) and they utilize CPANEL and they currently do not have any issues with FP.

Does the issue with H-Sphere still exist?

The CPanel issues don't exist because they run on Unix. The H-Sphere issues are with IIS on Windows servers only. H-Sphere does not have a way for clients to set permissions in IIS without potentially creating a security risk to the other users on that Windows server.

If your clients were using FrontPage on a Unix machine, they would have the option to change permissions on files and directories themselves. And if not through FrontPage, I know they could through SSH or WebShell3 without having to contact you or you contact us. I believe this has been discussed in several threads in this forum, so I'm sure you could find a lot more detail by searching through them.

Thanks for the reply, I find that to be very interesting. So, what I possible did was set the client up with a windows hosting package rather than a Unix package, which then you are saying will take care of the problem that we were seeing? No one ever attempted to tell me this. I will search through the forums and see what else I can find.

You're welcome, CJ. Best thing to do if you don't receive a reply here is to send in a trouble ticket. Those we definitely will reply to. I'm still not sure if you could change permissions on a Unix account through FrontPage itself, but you definitely could through SSH or WebShell3.

PSoft is also working on a solution to the Windows permission setting problem. I haven't had a chance to check out if 2.4 has resolved the issue yet or not. You might want to read up on the H-Sphere 2.4 thread as well.

Since hsphere is a cluster that can use windows or unix that is something to always keep in mind. There are differences. Windows has issues w/ the user permissions and sub-ftp. Remember cf and mssql are windows db's too. That basic fact and the differences between a unix and windows acct. come up all the time. Even php which works on both may have somethings that are available on either os.
