Nameserver IP Migration

***** THIS ONLY AFFECTS HSPHERE RESELLERS *****
***** IGNORE THIS IF YOU ARE A CPANEL OR VIRTUAL USER *****

On Saturday, May 22, 2004, at approximately 11PM, we will perform the migration of the nameserver IPs. This is another step in cleaning up our network configuration and ip layout for our cluster. Also, we will no longer have access to the '65.57' IP block after August. We will be migrating the remaining servers off these blocks in the summer months ahead, but we feel it is important to give plenty of time for resellers to update their nameserver IPs.

To do this.

1) Log into your Admin CP
2) Click on "E.Manager" then "Server aliases".
3) Click on the trash can button beside each nameserver to delete them.
4) Click on the "Submit" button to re-submit your nameservers.
5) Notice the IP's have changed. If necessary, make the IP changes with your registrar. Some registrars will require this some will not.

The new IPs are as follows:

ns -> 216.157.145.10
ns1 -> 216.157.145.11
ns2 -> 216.157.145.12
ns3 -> 216.157.145.13

You can begin updating these IPs as soon as you are able, we have the IPs on the machines and active. We will keep the old IPs on the servers for some time, but we do emphasize the need to migrate your IPs quickly. You can do this by contacting your registrar and following their procedure to update the IPs of your registered nameservers.

If you have any questions or comments please let us know. Please note however that updating your IPs at your registrar is a task only your registrar can do, we cannot do this for you, nor can we contact your registrar on your behalf. If your registrar does not provide a web interface for updating IPs, then please email their support desk or call them. We are still happy to answer any other questions you may have.

I also have different ips for:
ns2: 216.157.129.251
ns3: 216.157.131.129
Should I update those to the new ones you list above too?

no downtime?

Since the old and the new IP addresses of the name server are on the server we should not have any downtime when we update our nameserver with the registrar - right?
Thanks!

Correct, there should be no down time providing people make these changes at their registrar now and don't leave things till the last minute

Just to clarify (the FAQs from the support tickets):

If you're not using ns, ns1, ns1, and ns3 as your nameserver hostnames or are not using them in the same order as we do, go by IP address:

65.57.231.100 => 216.157.145.10
65.57.231.120 => 216.157.145.11
216.157.129.251 => 216.157.145.12
216.157.131.129 => 216.157.145.13

Never mind that the changes are not yet reflected in the control panel. Both sets of addresses will be active for the duration of the migration, and for some time past the 22nd too.

If ns2 and/or ns3 come up as invalid nameservers... well, register them.

Don't change anything as far as the nameservers that are being actively used by any domain goes. Change only the IP addresses for the registered hosts/nameservers/domain host servers or whatever else your registrar calls them.

If your registrar does not let you change IP addresses yourself, sorry... contact their support to have them changed and then consider moving to a better registrar.

This may be a dumb question, but where does this have to be done? Only on the registrar that the Service Domain is using? For instance, if my Service Domain is xyz.com, my nameservers are ns,ns1,ns2, and ns3.xyz.com. So, Must I go to the registrar and request them to change the IP's associated with ns,ns1,ns2, and ns3.xyz.com?

Exactly... your other domains point to your service domain's nameservers (servicedomain.com), so there isn't anything to change for your other domains... They do not control the IPs for the main domain.. I would really hate for someone else to be able to change MY ips!

I've noticed that some registrars ask you specifically for the IP addresses of your name servers, when you register a domain, not the domain names themselves.

When a new domain is created by a client, HSphere send the name server IP info out in an email, for example:

"You have chosen to transfer domain "themissingpeace.com.au". To complete the transfer, you need to contact your Domain registrar and have the DNS information changed; otherwise your site will never be available online.
These are the target DNS settings:
Domain name: newdomain.com.au
Primary DNS server: ns1.servicedomain.com 65.57.231.120
Secondary DNS server: ns2.servicedomain.com 216.157.129.251"

So the question is, what happens for clients who have registrars who demanded the name server IP addresses specifically?

Cheers

If they want the IP addresses, they are already given in that mail, isn't it??

Hello, Can anybody guide me to the place where I change this on the GoDaddy website?

It was there and now I just can't find it.

I just did these myself. If you have multiple domains be sure to select the DOMAIN name under "MANAGE DOMAINS" that is used with your Nameservers.

When you select the right domain you will see "DOMAIN DETAILS" on the right hand side. Look towards the bottom of that column and you will see "Domain Host Summary". Click the + symbol next to that and you will see your nameserver information and "Click here to see details or to modify. " click that.

Just change the IP's to reflect the new ones and then click Save Changes.

Be sure to match the right IPs to the right nameservers when changing, they may not be listed in order.

Register.com?

Has anybody done this for Register.com? All I see is an option to DELETE my nameservers and then re-add them. And I am pretty sure that they do not even ask for the IP when you submit a new nameserver...

register.com requires you contact their support. They don't have an automated way to change the IPs (You can add, but can't change the NS... Deleting won't help either, since it will just pull the old IPs back).

I think this was asked, but not specifically answered - and sorry for beating a dead post!

I've updated the IP's for my service domain with GoDaddy. Luckily, most of the domains I host with Matrix are also registered there, so there is no updating needed, but for some not hosted with GD, they actually are still listing the old Matrix IP's in the Whois. Will this update automatically (say over a 48 hour period), or is it recommended I go to each other registrar and manually update these to reflect the correct IP's?

I don't exactly know how you can update your service domain's nameserver IP's at a registrar that the domain is registered at... :/

It takes some time for them to propagate, I've seen nameserver IP changes take more than 72 hours, which is why we are giving you guys 3 months

no, not quite the question, but thanks for trying...

I'll rephrase:

I updated the IP's for the 4 nameserver aliases (of my service domain) with GoDaddy (where it's registered). That's all fine and dandy, and all the domains that I have with GoDaddy (hosted with Vortech) are fine because GoDaddy doesn't specify IP's when submitting the 2 nameservers for each domain.

The issue I'm curious of is for the domains that are with other registrars that do specify IP's when submitting the 2 nameservers - will they automatically update, or do you recommend I resubmit them? When I do a whois of some of those, they're showing the old IP's of those 2 assigned NS's.

If the question is too confusing, I'll just go ahead and resubmit...
