WAP@mail phone and carrier recommendations

My son developed a need to be able to check email on his cell. I told him I'd develop a WAP page to login to @mail with so he wouldn't have to enter all of the redundant data.
He called his carrier - Sprint PCS - and was told that he could only use their email. Sounds to me like they were full of it as their phones can be used to browse the web and interact with WAP pages.

To cut to the chase, he wants to switch carriers. Has anyone had particularly good experience with a carrier/phone combination and WAP @mail? He lives around NYC.
