xMambo CMS (Mambo Open Source)

Hello everybody:

I have seen Mambo mentioned several times here for CMS recommendations, so I thought I would share some Mambo news that you may (or may not) find interesting.

1. I have released a 100% xHTML/CSS compliant version of Mambo called xMambo. It is a developer's release but is already driving a few live sites.

2. As a result, I have been invited to join the core Mambo development team, and all of my core changes will be integrated into the "real" Mambo.

So, a very good CMS is about to get even better.

http://xmambo.electricjet.com (my version of Mambo - hosted here!)

http://mamboserver.com (the real deal)

Well worth checking out if you are interested in a free, GPLed content management system that runs MySQL/and PHP.

Mambo is a great system for small websites/portal, but don't even think about doing something complex with it. No enough levels of user rights and only one level of categories.

xMambo is a good idea, but the problem is that all modules have to be converted otherwise you can break W3C compliance. Let's hope all major modules like Docman get xMambo certified.

Well, there are already some large, complex sites running Mambo:

http://devshed.com (3 million visits/mo)

http://aspfree.com (another devshed site)

and several others doing that kind of traffic. Also, next version will have much improved ACL functionality. And I have found it fairly simple to simulate multiple category levels, for many cases.

Also, I have already ported over ReMOSitory (download system) and others are hard at work converting other modules/components.

I would call these sites large, but not complex in their navigation structure .
Simulated categories do work, but they are a pain to maintain since every change that you do has to be manually synced with the main, user or My menu depending on where they are linked from, etc.

Xaraya is way more advanced in thie field imho.

What do you mean? Mambo OS has been developing faster than virtually any piece of software I have been involved with, and has a more active developer community than almost any other CMS I have ever seen.

Also, xaraya does look nice. But from what I can gather, they are still much more geared as a "community portal" based on the nukes, whereas Mambo is much more suited to a "corporate" type of website. But I confess I did not actually download and install xaraya.

For Mambo, I agree with you, the core team (you now! =) ) is very fast, but the transition from 4 to 4.5 took a long time so if going to 4.6 or 5 take the same amount of time, it's not for tomorrow. I just hope that you will release interim versions with improved ACL,etc. whenever an important core feature is ready.

And as for Xaraya. I also agree with you, their historic roots still show and it's a problem for more standard websites.

I hear you. Let's just say that there have been more than 400 cvs commits since 4.5 was released, and that while it will not be tomorrow by any means, we plan an interim release sooner rather than later.

Lightbulb I've been forced to mambo

Yep, I took a look at that mambo thing.

I have to admit. It looks reeeeally nice. I've been a diehard asp guy for quite a long time, though I've worked some with php. I've been trying like hell to avoid php but this damn mambo thing has forced me into it. I'm going to give it a shot and see how well it works. If what everybody here is saying is true, it looks like it just might be the ultimate solution for providing my customers with the ability to edit their own pages. And best of all it's free with no requirement to put their copyright information on the bottom of your pages!

Yep, these mambo guys are really onto something. I was using webedpro, but I'm not so sure that's the best choice anymore. This mambo thing has got some serious potential with all the add ons. It could save me tons in materials for building websites.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can use this for commercial purposes, as long as you don't charge your customer for the software. I would be charging them for the installation / customization / graphic design part, so I think I'm in the clear.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated... Specifically, I'm looking for a photo gallery system where my customers can upload their own photos and create their own categories, and a calendar system with multiple users with their own usernames and passwords for posting their own calendar events.
