Subdomain or 3rd level

Can anybody explain me the difference between a subdomain and a 3rd level domain?

As far as I can see they both have a seperate folder in my account and I can show them in the browser pointing at http://sub.mydomain.com and http://3rd.mydomain.com. So I don't see a difference at the moment.

Third level is a way to let your users use your domainname for access to their site

Say your service plan is yourserviceplan.com.
You can create a sub domain called mypizza.yourserviceplan.com.

If you have enabled third level domains when you set up a plan in hsphere then when your user is ordering that plan they can choose a domainname based on your serviceplan domain.

So instead of them reserving www.joesplumbing.com or using a domainname they already have, they could select to have their site be hosted at joesplumbing.yourserviceplan.com. In this case this thirdlevel domain is listed under their account NOT yours. By default the web would be able to access their site at joesplumbing.yourservicedomain.com or www.joesplumbing.yourservicedomain.com

If you have enabled sub domains in the plan they signed up for they can also then set up their own subdomain called mypizza.joesplumbing.yourserviceplan.com which shows up in their account cp not yours.

If you have enabled third level hosting for a plan an extra entry appears in two places.
1)In the signup process where they get to say the domain they want associated with the initital account. It lists your servicedomain with an input box next to it so they can type in what they want the thirdlevel to be.

2) In a users control panel when they click Add a domain, third-level is an option.
