That happens when the mail server reaches its concurrent user limit, which I believe is 1000 users at a time, it was 500 and has recently been raised to 1000.

Yeah, I've noticed something similar (using Netscape Communicator) regarding the server being busy, or something similar. It's been happening for the past several days.

My guess is that the mail servers are overloaded. I don't know though - perhaps it's time for a third mail server???

The servers aren't really overloaded, but I do not believe we want more than 1000 concurrent users, but maybe it is time for another mail server, I don't know.

I'll remind admin about the idea I brought up awhile back about a coding mail server - used specifically for SMTP calls from scripts. This would reduce the load on the server AND make it more reliable.

ALSO - could everyone think of reducing the frequency of mail checking? If everyone reduced it to every 5 or 10 minutes, we'd all be getting our mail fast and would reduce the load substancially. I have mine set at 10 minutes.

I use mozilla mail and check every 10 min, most of the day, as the ticket system send in tickets all the time, I don't see more than one error a day. You lose customers over this? All you have to do it hit OK once.

But I have no control over this.

Yes I do

I've even had problems myself where it doesn't connect 5 or more times in a row. I do hit Ok , get the password box a few times, then hit cancel. On the next scheduled check, the same thing happens. This has gone on for 30 minutes and more. I get frustrated.

My customers, some of whom are trying to run businesses get real pissed when they can't send or receive email. Add to this that a lot of emails they are sending are getting returned by the mail servers for one reason or another - usually that "the domain is not local".

I agree that it's not an acceptable problem. As is that seems to matter here.

Sorry for the negativity, just a little frusterated with Vortech now. You guys would be so damn awesome if things were a little more reliable!

Not this thing again....

I have actually set my mail client to check every 15 minutes and have even tried 20 minutes. Alas, nothing helps. We had it resolved for a little while because this was happening back in February.

Clients can get mighty upset with this because e-mail programs check e-mail themselves and should not be manually attended to.

Come on guys, please, do the right thing here. This is frustrating stuff.

Peace!
