Outlook Express Email Question

How can I set Outlook Express to send mail through my domain account? For outlook, I need to select the option to login to my incoming maik server first... but that option is not available in OE.

I am not sure if i correct your problem entirely. But you can add [any] email account to outlook.

The steps are some thing like this:

Tools > Accounts > Add > Mail > Just follow the steps from here on.

Incoming and outgoing server will be your domain:
mail.yourdomain.com

Also the username is your full email address:
user@yourdomain.com

This should create a new account for ya.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Under the servers tab in the properties for your mail account.
Click on "My server requires authentication,
then click settings and put in your ISP info.

I think what xweb is saying is that in order for smtp to work under vortech's (pop-before-smtp) model is that you need to check incoming mail before sending outgoing mail. Outlook has an option for this but Outlook Express does not.

It will work if you *manually* check your mail first before sending, but many of my gumby clients can't figure this out. It is much worse for dialup clients who write mail offline, then connect to send - if you are always online, chances are you did a scheduled "check mail" in the last few mins anyway.

I requested SMTP-Auth to be enabled - in this model, your email client authenticates with your credentials when sending mail. This is supported by Outlook AND Outlook Express, and would solve the problem. Unfortunately it doesn't work yet.

Check out this thread for more info:

So the answer to your question is until SMTP-Auth is enabled, you are screwed!

I read your thread, but checking mail ahead of time does not do it, either. Id there really no way around this?
There has to be.

Hmm it should .... do you have "my server requires authentication" turned off ?

What error are you getting when you try to send?

You should be able to do this UNLESS your ISP is using a Port 25 restriction. When this is activated, you will typically get an error that reads like:

" ... RELAYING DENIED ..."

When trying to send mail using your domain's outgoing (SMTP) server. This restriction requires you to use the ISPs outgoing mail servers - some national and local ISPs have this activated. According to their "logic" it reduces the amount of spam generated. Only way around this is to get another ISP that doesn't use the restriction.

There is no error

All that happens is that I am asked to enter my username and password, but nothing that I put in works.

Also, to answer Jammin's q, I have "my server requires authentication" checked. That was the issue with my old hosting provider. Checking that usually did the trick.

This check incoming mail first flag in Outlook XP is a new feature to Outlook. It seems to be the only way to make this work. Users of older Outlooks and all Outlook Express seem to be SOL.

You will never believe this... I unchecked "my server requires authentication" and the mail went out. This is looney.

Thumbs up admin,

At my work location, it needs to be on. Weird, but, if it works, it works!

I do believe it...! SMTP Auth doesn't work, I'm hoping vortech can fix it.
