Suggestions for Co-Lo Server

I'm going to have Vortech co-locate a server for me, but I have NO idea what to buy. The server will just be for one big client of ours. Software isn't really an issue because I know what I need there. My issue is hardware.

It doesn't have to be the fastest or most heavy duty server ever. Just a 1u with two drives (I want to mirror them) and enough memory to handle one client with not a ton of data.

Any suggestions on what/where to buy??? Admins care to chime in??? Brad???

Thanks for the help!

Personally I've had good luck with the Dells we run (Poweredge 1750's), their after hours support has been pretty good too (of course ya pay extra for that). You can get a smaller one I think its the Poweredge 650 which would probably suit you think it runs around $800 US or so, if you go to the dell site and find their server configurator you can basically spec the machine out yourself and get a price quote

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, a configured Dell with 2 IDE drives, even with low memory and the smallest processor available is still almost $1800. I've checked zipzoomfly.com and they have servers with no drives starting at $500. Even a pair of 40GB drives plus 512MB memory is only about an extra $500.

I'm just not sure what to select and why. My problem is I have very little idea what I'm doing. I'm a software guy.

try www.tigerdirect.com

We use them at client locations, they are fairly robust and at very good cost.

Comes out around $1400 for me with 2 40GB Drives 1/2G memory no O/S license. 2Ghz Celeron .. just make sure you get a support contract with whatever you buy unless your physically able (and willing to) drive to a datacentre at 3am to try and resolve a hardware issue on your box. There always seems to be a bit of a premium on 1U stuff too, even the dam cases empty seem to cost a fortune.

What about a second hand RAQ4 ? what OS you intending to run on this machine ?

Brad custom builds all of our servers (and desktops) so I am not sure how much help he can be on pre-fab ones. Now if you wanna talk parts, then he's your man.

Something's only worth what someone else is willing to pay though if you've got people buying em then your probably at a good price point.

I was kidding. LoL I generally start them out at $50 and see what happens. The 1Us definitely sell alot quicker than any of the larger ones.

Yeah probably b'cos 1U rackspace costs less to host usually .. crazy to use 2 or 3U space if you can squeeze all you need into a pizza box I guess.

How about posting links to the ebay auctions you put up in the reseller forum too ? I'm sure other people here would be interested as well in some of the stuff your flogging off.

I would definitely be interested in a 1u.

Brad and I talked about using a server you guys already had, but my client dragged their feet and now we are in buy mode.

I sent an email to Brad today also to just ask advice. Brad is definitely the hardware man, which is great. He and Craig have always been awesome. We're ready to buy SOMETHING. I just need to figure out what and get it rolling.

Thanks.
