I'd make some sort of rude comment but it would probably be taken as just some devious way to increase my own post count, so I won't

All the MSSQL Servers are done...Hmmm wonder if I should lock this now to prevent the post boosting yet empty "Thanks Dave" responses??

This is probably more one for Brad, but whilst I appreciate installing hotfixes should be a priority, it would really be nice to at least get say 24 hours notice before its done, after all these are MS hotfixes we're talking about here which have in the past completely screwed machines before on first release so it would be nice to at least have an opportunity to warn our customers up front just in case.

Which updates were being applied ? I assume its the MDAC one ? .. probably not one that is 100% urgent due to it being pretty hard to execute the flaw outside your own network (especially if port 1434 is still blocked after the sql slammer worm).

You probably should have locked it Dave

Yea the port should still be blocked. But with any MS update I like to stay up with them.. Helps me sleep better, plus dave was there at night so thought it was a good time to jump on them..

You could actually automate the whole process by using something like SUSAdmin actually.

But, the point was, with non-critical updates which this one was, is there any need to apply them with 30mins notice ? if it all turned to custard for some reason you'd have people yelling at you for sure about the lack of notice. Why not schedule a consistent weekly window where any updates available that week which are deemed not to be absolutely critical "must install now" patches ? get applied. Even automate the whole thing with something like SMS, or SUSAdmin to some extent.
