Thanks Adam for your offer to help. Could you explain to a newbie the steps to take? I have avague idea but I don't want to mess things up.

And also, I do not quite understand the difference between a "Quick SSL" certificate and a "real" one. When would I choose one or the other?

Thanks in advance,

Joanne

Here are some instructions to get you started:

http://www.psoft.net/HSdocumentation...seller_cp.html

QuickSSL certificates are real SSL certificates, however because of the 10 minute authentication process they only authenticate that the certificate was purchased by the valid owner of the domain on which the certificate is used. They do not validate that the organization purchasing the certificate is a valid business entity. Your users will never know this unless they go in to look at the details of the certificate. The certificate protects sensitive information just as well as a more expensive one. The only problem you may run into is that some very old browsers (I think in the 3.x range) may only recognize Verisign certificates. If it helps, I chose to use QuickSSL for my own control panel.

If you are asked which server type you are using, choose Apache+OpenSSL if available, otherwise Apache+SSLEasy.

Hope this helps,

Adam

Question Got stuck

Ok, I ordered the Quick SSL and followed the instructions to install it. However, when I go to Shared SSL Manager in my administrative account the drop down box for "Shared IP Tag" is empty. When I try to upload the certificate files, I'm getting an error message about the missing shared IP tags.

Where did I miss a step?

Puhh, almost there - I hope. Thanks for any help,

Joanne

Try going into the CP SSL Manager instead of Shared SSL Manager. The Shared SSL Manager is for setting up a SSL certificate to share with your customers, which is not what you want to do in this case.

Hope this helps,

Adam

Smile Yepee

Thanks, works like a charme now! I had just forgotten to upload the new certificate to the administrative account.

It works already? In my case I had to ask Matrix to restart the CP before it would work. But that's great.. glad I could help.

You are absolutely right. I was too early with my yepee. My control panel is secure and I'm not getting a security warning. However, when I test my sign-up links, the user is getting the security warning. Did I miss another step or do I just have to wait?

On your CP SSL Manager screen, you should now see a port number and an IP and it should be set to 'On'. The final thing you need to do (if you haven't already) is click the 'Change' button and confirm to switch to secure URL. If you haven't yet done that, go ahead, and then open a ticket for someone at Matrix to restart the CP software. That should take care of it as long as you previously went into the 'Edit' mode of that same page and you were able to submit your live certificate into the CP. If you want, post or PM me your URL and I'll take a look at the cert to help verify everything looks ok. Good Luck.

One other thing, when setting up your secure CP, the IP address for your CP is changed. You may not actually start hitting the new IP address until 24 hours have passed and your ISP's DNS servers have received the new IP address. That could cause a change in behavior also.

This is great news! However now I have to decide wheter or not to trust Hsphere with signups

Might I also enquire about the multipull domain SSL availble. Would this allow me to give my clients their own SSL?

Thanks again
Nik

I guess I was lucky. My new https address started working immediately. I was wondering how that restart of the CPanel will be initiated. I will put in a ticket and then it should work.

Thanks soo much for your help, Adam. I hope I'll be able to some newbie down the road in the same way.

Nik- I'm pretty sure shared SSL hasn't yet been implemented. I went ahead and set my signups to use HSphere, with a link at the bottom to the old "manual" signup form telling users to click there if they have problems. Hopefully it will work out. I've had a few signups since and they seem to be going great so far. Good luck =)

Question How Come...

that I still get a security warning that the name on the security certificate does not match the name of the site.

Here is my signup link if anyone wants to test it.

https://cp.webworkhosting.com:8443/p...nup/begin.html

(I did not customize the template yet because I want to cover the basics first.)

Thanks,

Joanne

I did not get an error but I am in RH on netscape right now. But I did notice your SSL cert was for webworkhosting.com not cp.webworkhosting.com

SSL certs must match the domain just right or it gives and error.
