E-mail problem

This is the second time this is happening: I try to download my mails and the delivery gets stuck. Kind of like as if it were a huge file. Now, when I go into the account via web based browser, I cannot see any offending e-mail on the server. Any suggestions what could cause that?

Thanks.

Question Update

I just went through my e-mail via the web interface and deleted all messages marked as [SPAM], leaving behind the legitimate e-mails. After doing so, I was able to download my e-mail via my e-mail program (I use Outlook 2000). Perhaps something in one of those messages through off my e-mail program?...?

Question E-Mail Still Getting Stuck on Download

I'm still getting frozen e-mails when attempting to download mail. What typically happens is that in the morning, I boot up at home and check my e-mail using Outlook 2000. This generally works fine, but with increasing frequency (perhaps 2-3 times/week), the download proceeds and freezes about 1/3 of the way through retrieving messages.

I've been through a round of support e-mails with Matrix, the end result of which is that they attempted to download messages using Outlook Express from my account and that they were apparently successful in doing so. Their solution to my problem was that I should switch to Outlook Express since it has "no issues" downloading mail. This is not a realistic solution, as I use many features of Outlook that aren't included in Outlook Express. Besides, I use Outlook to obtain e-mail from accounts not hosted at Matrix/Vortech and don't experience this phenomenon. But, to try it out, I setup Outlook Express on my work machine, which has a different ISP than my home machine, and had the same trouble. Fifty-six messages were downloaded, then Outlook Express froze up on me. The only way I can resolve this is to go into @mail and manually delete unwanted messages from it, after which Outlook/Outlook Express will be able to download the remaining mail.

Matt at Matrix stated his opinion that this is not a server issue since "Outlook Express has no issues downloading the messages, but you [i] still do." He suggested that the problem might be (1) my ISP, (2) my timeout setting in Outlook (which he suggested increasing), (3) my virus scanning software (I use McAfee VirusScan), or (4) my firewall. In any case, he made it clear that this issue is mine to resolve.

Since (1) I'm experiencing the problem with two different DSL providers (at home I use Earthlink and at work we have Verizon), (2) I've increased the timeout in Outlook to five minutes, (3) I've attempted to download e-mail with my virus scanner turned off, and (4) my home and office networks have different firewalls, (5) I've had the same problem from multiple computers, and (6) I don't experience this issue with e-mail accounts hosted by others, I'm not so sure that the problem really is on my end.

It appears that the problem is some kind of offending e-mail message that can't get downloaded, but which can be deleted (since I manually delete it with @mail).

If anyone else has experienced this and resolved it, or if you have suggestions of how to resolve this either in Outlook or through H-Sphere (or any other way), please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

If I lose connection to the Exchange server, thats that, I'm done for. Can't even open up new IE windows... Fun fun.

Soon as Exchange reconnects, BOOM, the windows open instantly (even the ones i'd been waiting for).

It only has happened about 3 times for me. IE continues to work fine. If I log into webmail, and delete the spam mail (and others) it starts working again...Still gathering info....

Sounds very similar to what I experienced. In my case the mail that hung up came from a certain sender (a customer). So I assumed the problem was on her end. The only way to get my e-mails was to go into webmail and delete her mail then the others would download. She is using a background in her mail and my suspicion was that it had to do with that? But at other times I am receiving her mails just fine.

Actually everything should come right again once the client has timed out, it's pretty normal, your connection to the exchange server is in effect a network share, so it's just like if the network share to a server died, windows will generally "hang" until a specific timeout periods met .. normally between 60 and 180 seconds.

I appear to be on the MAIL2 server for my e-mail. Which e-mail servers are those of you experiencing the mail freeze on?

In my past experience in desktop support, I've had numerous problems with Outlook 2000 processing emails, especially with attachments, anytime after the Email Security updates. This is with different email accounts on different ISPs in different parts of the country. Sometimes it would take OL 20 minutes to download a small message with a .zip attachment, or I'd have to use another client & delete the problem messages.

If you peruse the MS newsgroups for Outlook, you'll see this problem posted again & again by OL 2000 users. To me, this implies a software issue, espsecially if other mail clients allow you to clear the hangup.

This is happening on Outlook 2003 for me (twice). Once on Outlook 2002. Just waiting for it to happen again, so I can log some more information.

Update

I've installed three separate e-mail programs, Netscape 7.1 (and its e-mail program), Eudora 6.0.2, and Pegasus Mail 4.12 (all using POP3, not IMAP). I am having the same problem with these programs as with Outlook and Outlook Express -- a number of messages are downloaded and then downloading freezes, apparently at the same offending message.

But, I can still get in through @Mail and view/delete messages, so my mail is accessible, but apparently not always from client applications.

Is anyone else experiencing the "mail freeze" with anything other than Outlook?
