Until now I have told my customers that spam was automagically removed, now I will have to explain to every one of them how to setup filters. I just want to be sure that it's the last change for a while. I don't know about your customers, but mine see me as not knowing what I am doing since I tell them a different story about the way the servers handle spam every month.

As the old saying goes, "don't count your chicken's..."

Changes to a shared system as large as this one are bound to change a few times before a final setup is realized. SpamAssassin has been a beta test for Matrix I think, so a couple of tweaks before it's solid are not unusual.

A final question to Matt/Alex/Brad... you say that SA was causing issues on the servers, but that you'll also be re-enabling it. Can you disclose:

a) what trouble it was causing, and
b) will you be turning it back on completely, or just letting it tag messages so that we can monitor locally?

Why did ya tell them that though when it wasn't actually the case ? only stuff over 8.0 was removed (iirc), a lot of spam I get falls in the 6.5-8.0 range so it wasnt removing all spam currently.

over 8 was what I remember too.

I've got SAProxy set to 5 locally, and it's working nicely. I don't know about you Brangwyn, but I would seriously recommend it to users that want a local solution. Tags headers at my discression and reformats the message to text so I can't be tracked by would-be spamaholics.

I told them that because the old system removed almost all the nasty spams that we did get. It was very effective.

This is a nice feature especially if you use outlook. Will check it out. Pegasus has this built in. It will never send this info. One more reason to luv it!

The tag has been changed to [SPAM] as requested.

Just FYI, I believe the previous issue was related to the shell script we were using to remove emails with scores greater than 8. Load on the machines is low at the moment (<1) and has been since I reenabled SpamAssassin. I do not believe we will be removing messages again.

That will teach me to come by here now and again ... I started getting emails with ******SPAM***** whichi is great for using with rules in oe or outlook ... with it just being SPAM ... it could catch subject headers that are legit .. I like the one with the **** in ... and I like it that it has a subject line starting with this ... or otherwise it would be horrendous just how would I be able to direct all such emails to a folder and what would be point of you marking them spam in that case it would not do a blind bit of good.

So far in marking spam as spam you have a 100% record with me (unlike my new norton 2003) ... I still have to tell it about addys.

You were deleting spam off the server before this? Ah is that why half my ezines that I'm subbed to have disappeared? I'm not even going to go there .. I subbed to lot ... its quieter now ...

last thing what's this with deleting exe files? My co-editors and I often email exe files to each other as we make ebooks ... are you doing anything to attachments?

my friend started using outlook 2003 and the attachments arrived as .eml files which when I tried to open them on my windows 2000 os in outlook 6 flash a box which I could not see then nothing .... to do with you or probably o03?

... what you have now with ********SPAM******** is perfect don't mess with that.

Tina

they were refusing any email with executable attachments, but I don't know if this has been rolled back with the new spam subject tagging.

I would suggest zipping any exe's before sending them just to be sure.

Executable attachments are blocked, they are not even allowed through. Qmail in no way modifies an email message, it will straight out reject messages with executable attachments.

The tag was changed tp [SPAM] since the asterisks *** can cause problem in some people's rule settings because the rule set may construe the * as a wildcard character as oppsed to an asterisk... (And most people do not know how to escape the wildcard).

Spam is marked at a threshold of 5, its merely marked, no email is deleted, and it is the responsibilty of the client to make sure they aren't deleting valid messages.

Ok on the subject line if people are having trouble with it ..

Thanks for the feedback ...

Here is the poll for [SPAM] if anybody wanted to contribute!
Thought it would help if I bring it to top.
