FTP and Web Shell

Here's a question for you... I have quite a lot of stuff I want to transfer to one of my sites. In fact it's a transfer of files & data from a client's existing site to his account with me, which could be a fairly common thing to have to do when picking up a client with an existing site.

Anyways, what I want to know is if there's a way to transfer the files directly from the external site's FTP account into mine.

It would be wonderful if Web Shell allowed you to "upload" from another FTP site into yours.... mucho quicker than downloading and uploading with my poor dialup account.

Have you tried FlashFXP? it allows you transfer from one server to another - I use it and it works great

ooh, a new toy! Cheers, it does work well! I'm at work using their adsl at the moment, so it's going at a good speed.

But what does it do exactly - does it somehow open a link between the two sites directly, or does it still download to your and then upload again, but just behind the scenes?

www.smartftp.com handles both FTP and FXP in one client as well.

FXP opens the sites remotely between each other so that the data is only going from remote server a -> remote server b instead of the usual remote server a -> local pc -> remote server b

It doesn't work on all servers always, but when it does it's a real time saver.

Very cool. However for me it seems to be transferring (from a WebCentral server in Sydney) at about 8 kbytes/sec... needless to say I get out of bed quicker than that. Perhaps WebCentral's servers don't support it.

If they didn't support it, it wouldn't transfer anything at all normally, you'd get an error when trying to establish the session.

Just noticing, FTP is verrry slow on my Vortech account, but rather snappy on my WebCentral account. Is this any reflection on the speed difference with one being in Oz and the other in the US?

And does FTP speed indicate an overall speed difference in web (HTTP) access or is there no logic in comparing the two?

If your transferring a large number of smaller files then you'll never see the full potential from FTP, it has quite big overheads when sending lots of small files, sending one big file should let you get a better idea of how it performs.

I know what you mean, but it's definitely slower... maybe the tyrrany of server distance.

But on that point, is there a ZIP/UNZIP component available to ASP? That would be very handy at times, to be able to upload an entire site by zip file and then run a line of ASP to unzip it all with the proper folder structure and everything all there.

Can't recall seeing any COM installed for zipping, but you can just use Webshell instead it will zip/unzip manually for you.

I don't know about to NZ or AU, but I can max out any connection I throw at the servers from here in TX, up to t1 anyway, haven't had the pleasure of using faster than that except cable, which fluxuates a lot on its own all the time, but bursts where faster than 1.5mb

Of those networks which Vortech is connected to (Level3, Cogent, Qwest, Epik) - which are servicing Asia/Australia? I can't seem to find any info about that. Vortech only have a map of the US, which is kinda nice for people who live over there.

Tracert is your friend just trace back to one of the servers and you'll quickly see what network its going over. Theres a reverse tracert option in the control panel for going back the other way too.
