GMail sucks :)

Google is offering GMail accounts again. I just signed up for one and then found out it requires ActiveX in your browser to work properly!

They have to be kidding! What better way of ensuring only IE users can use GMail and many of those will have it turned off (as I do) for security reasons. I don't trust ActiveX as far as I can lob a garden gnome and they expect me to turn it on just for them.

Even so, I prefer to use Firefox thanks very much, but oh no I can't use GMail with Firefox, what a ridiculous idea, whatever was I thinking?!

Silly silly people... maybe they should stick to search engines after all.

I can almost hear Micro$oft plotting ways in which to sabotage GMail thru ActiveX right now.....

It works fine for me in Opera on both Windows and Unix. Pretty sure Opera on Unix doesn't use ActiveX

I think they are also offering free POP3 access now if you don't want to use the web interface.

That's weird, I just can't get it to work in Firefox (1.0.7). I read up a bit and yeah it seems it does check for ActiveX initially, but doesn't use it if it's not supported. *blush*

Still, it's not working for me and I've disabled my firewall, reset all Firefox's Javascript settings... very strange. I wanna see what all the fuss is about!

POP is good... I use POP with my yahoo.com.au account (it's free if you get a .au for some reason)

I had read somewhere that gmail was using ajax so it's probably looking for an XMLHttpRequest object and defaulting to iframes if you don't have it. In either case though, I'd think you'd need javascript enabled.

Doh! Why won't it work for me?

It gets stuck on the "Loading..." page and stops there. The frameset around it is doing the check for XMLHttp etc. But onload it's supposed to then change the location of the frame - but it never gets that far.. the frameset onload event isn't firing for some reason.

I had that problem when they first came out using IE and FireFox. Found it was a cookie problem if I used the "Remember Me" option on the login page.

Cleared all cookies out for the site in both FF and IE. Now I only access it through FF and let the FF password manager do it's thing rather than the gmail "Remember Me".

IIRC, you can get to the gmail help from the login screen. They have a list of known problems there.

I know that in Opera, there is a setting where it will "identify" the browser as IE. If that is enabled, then GMail doesn't work because it can't actually process the page like IE. It gets stuck on the same "Loading..." page you are seeing. If I disable that setting, then GMail knows I'm using Opera and everything works fine. I'm not familiar with Firefox's settings, but perhaps you are running into something similar?

I got 1.07 also no problems here. same as always. Are you using the javascript blocking extension or adblocker check those. The javascript is very common if you don't say ok. Also possible your av has some kind of script blocking.

By the way anybody else getting password request sent to them from gmail. I got a couple...thought someone is playing or that I hadn't used it so it was just sending stuff. I really hardly use it.
