NT38 Hardware Exchange 12/20/05

We will be replacing the hardware for NT38 on Tuesday 12/20. The FTP and H-Sphere services will be shut down while we perform a live mirror. This will make the server as read-only as possible while maintaining web access. Please do not make changes to your files until after the hardware is changed out.

We will announce once the procedure is complete.

What's the expected ETA? Luckily I don't have anything on NT38, but weekdays are bad for long procedures, as my clients and I are in Oz, therefore 12 hours ahead so anything you do at night happens in the middle of the day. If possible, it would be great for us if long procedures occur weekends. Preferably over Christmas. LOL

How do you know what NT you are on??

Type an invalid subdomain in the browser eg. 1234.yourdomain.com it will show you.

There was issues with getting it to boot to new hardware. We have fixed that now so when we make the mirror it should just boot and work. There should be very little down time in this switch maybe 5 to 10 min max. Only thing customers will not be able to do is make changes in H-Sphere for there web site or FTP. This is just to make sure we have as live of a copy as we can with out taking the sites down.

Do you have a time when the mirroring will start on Tuesday so that we can send out an email to our customers and tell them not to make changes to the sites after that time as the hard drive will be mirrored and then switched over. And the mirror process, how long do you expect this to take a few hours or more?

It would start around 1PM, takes about 4 hours to make the live mirror. Then we have to do the backend stuff that will take another 3 to 5 hours so total FTP downtime should be about 8 to 9 hours. But sites will not go off line more then 10 min when we make the hardware switch.

NT38 is down again as we speak ! This has been going on for a couple of weeks now which is pretty poor service by any standards. I understand that you are having problems but I would like to think that as you are running a hosting service and taking money from people the time it takes you to resolve problems should be at the worst hours and not days or even weeks to find a suitable solution.

The current problem is what we are trying to fix, moving a live system with out reinstalling is not always that easy. Go home take out your copy your HD and stick in a different computer with different hardware I bet it will have issues. This is what we have been running in to. Other than the box random reboots there have been no long down times.

Hmm thats why we are changing the hardware today, the box has not been down for any long times today other than a reboot to put a drive in it.

Can we get a status and ETA? It would be nice to know when the cutover will be so we can copy changed db files and text files using http before the change is made so we don't lose changes since the mirror or data was copied.

On the new hardware as I type this. Please report any broken pages or oddities in a support ticket. I've hit a number of sites, and they have all been fine so far.
