Alert: Becareful at ATM's

I just saw this and it kinda freaked me out, I will now be puilling and yanking on any ATM I use to make sure it does have one of these, I will also be forcefully removing any "innocent looking leaflet enclosures"....

Be careful!!

This is weird to me because I just had some money withdrawn from my account from a gas station in Orlando...at a part of town I have never been to.

Wouldn't this only work for ATMs that don't have cameras i.e. not located at the bank?? Otherwise, whoever installed the stuff would be on camera installing it thus kinda letting the bank know that the ATM was tampered with.

This is true, but I think those camera's just record to tape and are not monitored, if this was done at say 8:00 on a friday night, think of all the accounts that can be cleared out before the bank notices....

Well, they keep the tapes for some period of time as I am forever seeing on the news some genius that stole someone's card and then went to the bank to use it in an ATM with a camera.

Also, most banks now offer online banking so it's rather easy to monitor all transactions coming through your account at any time of the day or night.

Those photos have been circulating for about 6 months now.

From my experience, the atm cameras are of sush poor quality, identification of a suspect from a video is next to impossible. That is if there is a camera, and believe it or not, only about 50% actually have a camera, the rest are just dummy black plexiglass to look like a camera. There are the exceptions, but I have only had about 3 usefull tapes in that last 12 years.

- Lindsey, that is the latest scam, skimming your card info, and then creating duplicate cards and use them at gas stations, had 3 reports of that last week in chicago area. I would suggest you cancel your card and report it asap.

The thing about the issue with her card was someone actually did a balance inquiry with the PIN #, which is the way to activate an actual card from the bank and THEN they used it to make a withdrawal. It sounds to me more like someone she knows has one of her cards instead of there being a duplicate fake card.

Skimming is the reason I no longer use my card in any gas pumps. People always have to be ruining things.

Actually this kind of thing has been going on for years and its one of the primary reasons many banks are looking to smartcards in the near future.

One of the silliest ATM Fraud scams I ever saw involved a group of people who used to leave a cardboard box next to the ATM with a sign saying something like "ATM machine Broken please place deposits in the box" .... and yes many people actually fell for this one! .. crude, but effective.
