Service Domain Overwritten
I am posting this here instead of a TT because I am so stunned and want to know if this happened to anybody else:
I am on NT8 with my servicedomain.com and I have a sub-domain under the same plan (subdomain.servicedomain.com). I was just working on the sub-domain, and after saving a file, ALL of the files in the sub-domain OVERWROTE everything in my main service domain and were deleted from the sub-domain. To put it another way: 1. My entire service domain was overwritten with files from the sub-domain 2. All files from the sub-domain were deleted and moved over to the main domain WTF??? I was using MS Visual Interdev when this happened, and it truly happened right before my eyes. I saved a small text change, hit refresh and BOOM everything was gone. I immediately went to the main service domain to check if that was working and there were all of my files from the sub-domain. Good god almighty this is a frightening system. I also just noticed that the sub-domain was replaced with the DEFAULT folders and files from H-Sphere. Something very whacky is going on here. EDIT: Matrix, if you want me to post a TT instead with all of the relevant details please let me know. I did not want to piss you off by doing both. Must be a windows only problem,, or maybe MS Visual Interdev?
I have a subdomain.servicedomain.com and make changes to both all the time,, never heard of such a thing. But i'm not using windows or MS Visual Interdev .

Whatever it is it is still happening:
If I open the file index.html in my sub-domain and make a change, it immediately overwrites the index.html file living in my main domain. If this is a Visual Interdev problem it is the first time I have ever seen anything remotely like it in more than 6 years working with the progam. Something seriously screwy is happening. I am going to recreate my VI workspaces just to see what happens but my gut tells me this is something with HSphere. |

ok, well if this is still happening you probably should put in a ticket with more specific details. I'll leave this thread open in case this has ever happened to anyone else,, but I certainly have never heard of this happening to anyone before.

I use subdomains REGULARLY, this has never happened to me, I just got Interdev a couple weeks ago, I had not messed with it, I might just make some good backups and try it out, see if I can "debug" the issue. I would make sure I have a good packet monitoring program to see the commands it is sending. One I would recommend if you want to see for yourself would be PacketMon from analogx.com

I have not had time to keep messing with this yet, but the more I think about it HAD to be some problem with H-Sphere. (Whether it was triggered by VI or not I do not know.) Here is why I believe this:
1. In both servicedomain.com and subdomain.servicedomain.com I had deleted all of the crap folders that H-Sphere creates during domain set-up. NONE of those folders were in EITHER domain. 2. The main domain has been up for months and months, the sub-domain for well over a week with changes being made all week 3. When everything blew up, all of my files were: a. deleted completely from the sub domain b. in their place, the DEFAULT H-Sphere folders (Webalizer etc.) had magically appeared including the login page. None of these files had been in my web previously. c. All of the original files from the sub-domain magically appeared in the main service domain and had overwritten the files that were originally in place. (/images replaced /images, etc.) How this could possibly be anything but something in H-Sphere I do not know. I'm all ears for any other explanations. I have not yet submitted a TT because I am trying to get the time to keep duplicating this if possible. |

Well H-Sphere is not going to move your files around like that.. It maybe subdomain.servicedomain.com's ftp is pointing to servicedomain.com dir that could cause this. But I am not going to waist my time trying to understand it here..
Please put in a ticket.. If you have post the ticket number so I can take a look.. I am sure its something simple just can't tell what with out looking.

Ticket
Ticket Number: Service Domain Overwritten #32078
I eagerly await your opinion on how this occured. When you check the domains, they will appear basically normal because I have already restored data using FTP. I have not yet tried to duplicate in VI. |

So using FTP worked fine but not uploading stuff in VI??

Yes, after everything blew up I opened FTP to check. Again, ALL files from the sub-domain had been deleted and replaced with the default H-Sphere files. All of the files from the sub-domain had been added to the main domain. I restored everything from back-up to their proper directories using FTP.
I know you say H-Sphere wouldn't move my files around like that, but how on earth did all of the default H-Sphere files appear out of nowhere??? It as almost as if H-Sphere got confused and completely recreated the sub-domain from scratch. I am not crazy. |

reply to the ticket so it will reopen it.. I am going to put the ticket on hold and email psoft about so they can check some logs for this. Trying to read H-Sphere logs files are about 1000x worse then MS I can't see how they tell what the thing does and does not do..

VI6 (SP5)
I also have .NET but was not in there when this happened. Also, I re-created my VI workspaces and so far the problem has not re-appeared. Believe me I will post here right away if it does, but I have a feeling it was a random glitch that somehow involved FP extensons (used by VI for uploading and saving) and H-Sphere's sub-domain system. |
