War of the Worlds
Who's seen it? I've heard so many people say the ending was disappointing, yet it was the way the book was written... HG Wells was a scientist and this short story was just making a point about how we humans are here simply because of biology. Also that the most "deserving" to survive aren't always the ones who seem stronger or more capable. It's all down to evolution. It's NICE to see a movie made true to the original book, not chopped to bits to serve ticket sales or express the opinions of the director.
Anyway, don't you see the subtext here? It's not about the microbes at all! Think about it... The martians planted those machines a million of years ago and have been asleep all that time... which means they had no idea about the last few rounds of public health care reform. Can you imagine the enormous lines of martians outside Medicare?! No wonder most of them died from the common cold. Then if you take inflation into account, a large portion of them had to go back to Mars to get more cash from the ATM... why do you think they were forced to scrounge around people's houses for food? The ones too lazy to get out of their tripods got all their nourishment from the drive-thru and after 30 days drowned in their own vomit. Not only that, but they weren't up with the latest news, so what do they do? Bring WEED with them! Not only did this give Chapelle Corby's layers someone to finally point the finger at, but before you could say "oohlahh", all the martians invading Indonesia were arrested, tried and roundly shot. In London, they made the mistake of chasing people into the Underground and many were found weeks later starving to death and begging for cigarettes or at least directions back to the surface. In China, someone let out that Martian Foot was a great aphrodesiac...... Please give generously to the "Save the Martians" fund. Throughout the UN, Martians found a great deal of weed anyway and progress generally slowed down from there. Many have now been successfully integrated into society, with most Europeans wondering what all the fuss is about. "Yeah, well, they are different, but with a nice suit and new pair of Italian... what? Oh sorry, an Italian shoe, they'll fit right in." The Euro has risen several points on the back of sales for environmentally friendly Fuel Cells for Tripods, and the ESA finally has employees who know what direction space is. The ones with orders to invade Australia are, of course, still in detention. On the bright side, there they were reunited with distant relatives who left the machines here in the first place a million years ago. This explains why the majority of the action was in the US. The few that made it back to Mars found their planet in ruins, after the White House leaked that one of the tripods had stepped on a copy of the Koran. Boom boom.

Like the post.
I don't remember the name of the best space invasion movie I eve saw. It was an old B&W thing from the 50/60's. Basically, while digging a new tunnel for the London undergroung, a space ship is discovered. People near it get visions of a Martian invasion millenia ago. The Martians are locust-like with a strong resemblance to the devil.

Yup, I believe that's it. I think it shows on the tv here as "The Pit". Seems to show up every 5 years or so. Definitely a classic of the genre.

I saw and read a few interviews with Cruize before I saw the movie. He seamed to be pushing Scientology a lot. I went into the movie with that on my mind... Probably not the best way to watch a film about alien invasion...........
Its not a bad film. The ending wasnt inspired, but it worked. |
