IIRC; Google announced POP3 and SMTP for Gmail in November 2004. If my memory serves me right, they said something about gradually rolling it out over a couple of weeks. November announcements also revealed that they where working on adding an antivirus as well as re-doing parts of the UI to support a wider variety of web-browsers...
Oh, they currently haven't any plans for adding IMAP support... |

Also ePrompter (www.eprompter.com) has a beta version out that will check your gmail and allow you to read/send text emails (no html or attachment support).
I've used ePrompter for years, it runs down there by my clock, checks multiple accounts at once such as yahoo, hotmail, regular pop3 accounts and now gMail. It takes up little space and is a great tool to preview email without loading Outlook or logging in thru a web client. Because it doesn't display html messages or have attachment support it's been a life saver helping me identify and delete infected messages from the server without downloading them to my PC. I'm still on dial-up and once I was getting over a hundred messages from someone with 1mb attachments that were infect. I was able to quickly and easily delete them so I could download my legitimate messages. The GMail beta version is still a little buggy. It will mark your messages as "read" that it gets the headers for, but the designer told me they are working on it. It's a "must have" for anyone who wants to stay on top of multiple accounts thru the day. And it's free!

RE eprompter
I admit at first I was skeptical ... it's not the prettiest of programs out there but it seems to do the job... better then keeping outlook open all day every day. Thanks for the heads up! |

the Gmail Pop3 works fine. I've been using it for a week or so and seems to work fine.
