New CP database system coming!! :)

I just wanted to let everyone know we have a CP database upgrade coming in the next week or so. Should not be much down time and will be done at night.

We are upgrading to FULL hardware raid 5, SCSI 320, dual xeon 3.6Ghz with 1MB, 8GB of ram and can go too 12 GB if needed. The current setup has 2.4Ghz 512k, SCSI 160 raid, with only 4 GB of ram.

We will also be switching the CPs motherboard to a tyan motherboard so it will also be able to go to 12GB and stop its random reboot from not liking the SMP gigabyte uses.

With these 2 upgrades the CP server should be MUCH more stable and the CP DB server should be able to load the full h-sphere database right in to ram making it MUCH faster..

We will send out an email with date and times this will be done for everyone once we get all the parts in and everything tested and ready to rock.

If we get the machine by the end of this week, we'll probably do the change sometime next week. Maybe next weekend. Want to ensure we fully test the system before moving data.

Thank you for the many upgrades/updates you have been doing.

Most companies these days worry too much about bottom dollar and just sit back and collect $$ and never bother improving.

Good to see you are in for the long haul.

Here, here!

As is everyone else I'm sure, I'm looking forward to the speed increase. Sounds like a really significant upgrade.

I hope it helps at least 25% incress would be real nice with the much faster CPUs and more ram along with the faster harddrives. We may even see more who knows..

But you are right we are here for the long haul we never want to be known as the fly by night host.. LoL

Sounds fantastic! The upgrades and support are so reassuring these days! "Cutting-edge" service too often means cutting costs and edging closer to unviability! Good to see real exceptions to that sad trend in business!

Very good to know I picked the right host in the end!

One question though - if the CP database is residing in RAM all the time, does that raise the possibility of losing lots more data if the machine does crash at some point? How often will it be written to disk?

Cheers and thanks for the great service!

Antic I think they just mean the HD won't really need too work much (no swapping needed). Unless you have an unusual bug issue writing to disk shouldn't be an issue. Having Raid5 is definetly there for data entegrity.

I'm with silverbug. I want one too!

Having databse in ram does not mean that data writes are done only in ram. When you write data in a database (something like postrgres/mssql/mysql etc...) your data is immediately written to disk.

The ram thing is mostly about reading data.

Cord you are 100% right.. Its all about reading that data right from memory that is much faster then disk.
