We have decided to taken some action to stop these spammers and bad mailing lists from going out of our network. We feel this to be a necessary action to take for the good of the majority of our clients and network.
Blocking will not start till 1/21/05 for all systems. All servers will only allow 500 messages to be sent in 24 hours before you are added to the 'badmail from' . After 500 sent, no email from that address will be allowed out. Also if you use php and donot have a from address set and it sends as httpd@server.com it will be bounced. You must use a real from address in all of your scripts. All servers will be sending mail though forward.vortechhosting.com so we will be able to manage all white and black listing though this system. If you have a mailing list that uses one of the servers you must send an email to support@vortechhosting.com including the following information: 1) Server you are on: 2) Domain name: 3) The 'From Email' used for your mailing list. 4) Your username: We will need all this info to whitelist your domain. ( If you are white listed and get spam complaints we will shut you off just as we've done in the past)

So a web-site with 100 active users has a limit of 5 emails a day per user

Are you asking us to provide the mail server or the web server?

if you send more than 500 emails from your email address in 24 hours that address will be blacklisted. (is that correct brad?)

Hey all,
First, This is "perFROM address". So each user has 500 mails per day. We are also not that picky about lists or busy users. If you are going to send more from one address... request it be whitelisted. We will. (Barring some wierd situation of a bad past history) We are also, (on the 21st), badmailing httpd@hsphere.cc. If you have a php script that doesnt have a freom address sent then it is sending from this address. Due to the number of php scripts we cant keep track of users easily if you dont have a from address set. This is giving spammers free reign on our systems. A web site with 100 active users can have each user send 500 mails a day. Just make sure each user sends from a valid from address. Please set a valid from address in your scripts! The secret here is "valid from address".... |

As for people seeing vortech servers,
Now, if you send mail through a php script and do NOT have a from address sent, then the address shown is "httpd@unix10.hsphere.cc" or some close approximation of this. If you set the from address (this applies to perl and ASP too) then it shows as comming from that address. The header will show the servername that the mail originated from. It will also show the first relay (forward.vortechhosting.com). The forward server will not show as the originating server. That will not change from the way things are at the moment. |

Other then the relay host that is the way things are set up now
nothing has changed. Is it the relay host idea that bothers you? |

Is there some way that you could allow this system (forward.vortechhosting.com) to be aliased to our service domain? I have a feeling there's a lot of people around here who don't want a Vortech server name showing up anywhere.

the servers all send out mail with originating addresses as the servername.. That cant be changed..
If you send mail from unix10 the originating server says unix10.hsphere.cc it always has.. That is the way the RFC states it has to be. |

"hsphere.cc" is reasonable though, because it doesn't directly say to a current or potential customer that we're a reseller and whose services we're reselling. If it's not possible to use our service name, could the server at least be renamed to "forward.hsphere.cc"? Having "vortechhosting.com" in there is what the problem is, as it defeats the idea of private label branding. I realize that anyone who really knows what they're doing can find out that we're Vortech resellers anyway, but it would be very much appreciated if you could continue the trend of at least making it as hard as is possible for the less knowledgeable.

That I dont see as a problem. I see your point and I think we can manage this change.
