This question keeps coming to me from the strangest places. The most recent came from the Cingular sales person I purchased our new cell phones from. It is regarding the new Windows XP service pack 2 update. It would appear that Mr. Gates expects users on dial up connections to use the auto update feature to download up to 255 Meg in order to update the software. My Cingular lady asked me if it was possible to download it from work and burn it to a CD because bandwidth at work is much better. Speaking from experience (Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 4), downloading a major update over a dial up connection is risky. If the transfer is corrupt, it could cause your entire system to become unusable.
So I navigated my way to Microsoft XP to search for a download. Finding none, I visited their developer center. There it was, a download for IT Professionals who need to update more than one computer. I am in the process of downloading it at the moment and will burn a CD tomorrow. Caveat, one should read all the technical information at the link provided. It warns against using this method for updating one computer. I understand it but with the same concerns as my Cingular sales person, I will be using my newly discovered file to update my home computer which is blessed with Windows XP Pro and a slow 40K connection to Gatesland.
Oh... the link?
