There won't be any downtime, but you can't modify your account for 24-48 hours.

It just like moving a user to any other system, it takes about 10 min, and there should be no down time for current customers as it keeps both sites up during the move. Then it goes back and deletes the user.

Question - How will the initial account be set up on nt52 ??

Net 1 or Net2 ??

If Net2 - When moving an account that was built for net1
will it run under Net2 until it is upgraded ??

If Net1 - Do we send another ticket after upgrading the site.

Do we wait the "24-48 hrs" ??

I assume any changes via ftp will go to the old site and not the new site !

Now that it is really here I would like a little more detail, or do we all

AFAIK The site is mirrored on both servers during the move, as the IP address is changed and DNS take 24-48 hours the do not change anything is a precaution to ensure your not inadvertantly updating data on the old server.

Those of you who know how to manipulate your DNS or create local host entries can get around this and should be safe to make updates though.

After moving some sites there looks like there is something more to this
then DNS.

Within the control panel several functions are disabled. If you attempt
do do much of anything you get " Cannot do - transfer has started "
type of messages. These continue long after the ftp manager correctly
reports, and a check via file manager confirms the site data has been
physically copied.

Something in the internals of p-soft prevents changes, and it looks
like it is almost hardcoded to flag the site for 48 hrs, as I moved
sites in a staggered fashion, and each cleared it's self almost exactly 48 hours from the start of the move.

Maybe p-soft is designed to just lock the site to avoid the time dns
used to take to stablize.

(I have found that since root-server submissions are now several times a day world wide, dns is stable 8 hours after any changes)

In any case you cant do much to the control panel for 48 hrs.

I've been trying to learn .net and frankly I'm not at all impressed... I hope classic asp stays around for a long time, but that's just my opinion... I know it can never be... but we can still dream can't we? []

The only reason anyone I've ever taught ASP.NET to ever fealt like ASP was easier and ASP.NET not worth the trouble to learn is because they were not able to make the mental shift necessary to move to ASP.NET.

This is not a ding on anyone who can't make the shift. It is a ding on the training material available. If you tried to learn ASP.NET 1.1 from a book, and all you ever knew was ASP or some other batch environment that was not event driven or object oriented, you were doomed.

Every 1.1 book I ever touched taught you how to program ASP.NET without using Visual Studio. Frankly, what makes ASP.NET worth learning IS Visual Studio.

Now that 2.0 is out the books are better, but the learning curve is steeper.

My first recomendation would be to go to one of those one week training seminars and get trained properly. Be careful about who you pick. The national training companies that will also teach you Word and Excel don't know beans about programming! Find a company that only teaches programmers and who use programmers to do the teaching. If you PM me, I can give you a couple companies to get training from that fit this criteia.

If you can't spend a week to get training, find a dotNet user's group to go to and go to it regularly. Unfortunately, most of these groups are no longer teaching the basics, but it won't hurt to go and see what can be done.

Keep in mind the following when attempting to learn ASP.NET
1) ASP.NET is primarily "Event Based" programming. Microsoft's goal was to make programming the Web "feel" like programming a Windows application. The mind shift you need to make for this to work is this. Instead of constantly telling the program what to do, the program will now tell you what it is doing and ask you if you want to make any tweaks along the way.
2) Dot NET in general is now Object Oriented. While ASP had the Class keyword, it did not allow you to leverage all things object oriented and very few ASP programmers used it.
3) Learn to use the wizards in Visual Studio. Like I said above, VS is the primary reason anyone would even bother learning Dot NET to begin with. If you are trying to use notepad or some other "IDE" (yes there are others you can use, but they fall short) or you try to use VS without the wizards, I don't blame you for not being all that impressed.

Finally, some book recomendations:
Microsoft has a series of ASP.NET books.
"Programming Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0: Step by Step"
This book teaches ASP.NET 2.0 from the Visual Studio perspective. Finally! Not very good otherwise, but it is the best I've seen.

Once you've got your mind wrapped around that, you can move on to the Core Reference and Advanced.

I taught dot NET for 3.5 years. Everyone from "Only ever did COBOL", "Only ever did ASP" on up. I also took a floundering organization from coding ASP using ASP 1.0 syntax to coding ASP.NET 2.0 using modern programming methodologies. I haven't taught anyone yet who left feeling the way your feeling about ASP.NET.

Yes, the move is currently necessary. All the 2003 servers will have it soon, but it will not be the default. The 2000 servers will not have 2.0 until they are upgraded to 2003.
