Yea its been someone what ok since we moved it's own server. But this was a big issue and very common issue it seems with CF MX. I really don't want to get rid of CF. That will be the very last option. Most likely we will keep it unless something like this happens over and over again.

It only happens when the server is rebooted it seems from reading over google and speaking with macromedia. I did find a way to mirror the system with some software, but then we could end up with the same issue on 2 systems at the same time as the neo-quary.xml file would have to be mirrored every time it gets edited.

Not trying to be a pain

Any idea when the mappings are going to be set up, I sent in requests over the past 12 hours to get a mapping set back up and I am down until it is done.

I need the following coldfusion mapping

/consultdesk to /consultd/consultdesk.com

Thanks for any help.

when you reboot, that means that afterwards any DSNs that we recommitted will be active?

BTW, when I try to recommit DNS to CFMX with H-SPHERE I get "Internal Error, Tech Support Was Notified" on all accounts except my default acount.

Also, this is counted as 'downtime', no?

If you make the changes and then we restart CF, this takes about 10 to 15 sec to restart the DSN should work. If you are getting an error with your DSN it would be best to delete it and readd it. That should fix the Internal Error issue you got. If you had a DSN of just "somename" and not username_somename you may get that error as that is pre 2.4 nameing and we are on 2.4 P5 now that also supports the CF DSN's as pre 2.4 did not unless you used CF 5 that just pulled from the ODBC settings.

My customer is beyond pissed now.

I'm suppose to be the expert this company hired... and I haven't foggiest idea when this issue will be corrected.

Having personally administered (successfully) both CF 5 and CFMX, I would LOVE to see CF 5 back on the server. CFMX has a few new features and options that actually are better. However, the few new features that it adds, do not outweigh the serious disadvantages of Macromedias product.

I would also like to point out that this is not the only issue that Macromedia requires a reinstall to fix. Furthermore, in my experience Macromedia is VERY unresponsive regarding outstanding issues, like this one that has affected us.

Whereas moving back to CF5 would be a viable option for us because our code is (for the most part) compatible with both, I don't think it would be viable for many others. The nicest thing about CF5 is that you could use DSN less connections like most other server side languages. If you did use a DSN, you sure didn't have to restart the service when you made a change.

My advice, being a former LOYAL die hard CF fan would be to start retraining your staff to write code using .NET or PHP. I urge all current CF developers: Do not stay on this sinking ship called Cold Fusion. Both .NET and PHP are free and in many ways superior in both reliability, flexibility, and speed.

I know that the speed thing can be argued as far as PHP goes, but it can not be refuted regarding .NET.

I do NOT want to see CF support at Vortech go away. This would be a HUGE cost not just to us, but to many people and would probably also cost Vortech in many lost accounts.

I would also like to issue a formal thank you to Brad and his team for sticking out another night of frustration with Macromedias decidedly inferior product and support.

I understand they are working hard to fix the problem.

Unfortunately, my customers (as probably many others) don't understand.

My site is still down... I do hope the problem is solved soon.

Concerning above about PHP and .NET... we have actually - already started to develop in PHP. Our primary reason is cost though. I still think CF is an excellent product - they cost of maintaining / upgrading the software is a bit expensive.

We have no experience with .NET... I would've expected the development / maintenance cost to be very high with .NET.

I personally don't like the way PHP "looks". It's much easier to develop in CF... but if push comes to shove...

Agreed. The rapid development of CF is still a strong selling point. Unfortunately, I believe that it is too little too late even with their new product that they have been developing.

I mean, CF costs THOUSANDS depending on what you neeed and it's current stability and maintenance issues are way too costly on top of that.

The .NET architecture can be a rapid development system, but there's a higher learning curve and the expense is in the development tools (if you need them - kinda required for RD).

Vortech Guys... Thank you for all of your tireless efforts to restore everything back to normal. Fortunatley my company has some very patient clients. With the exception of CFX tags every thing seems to be back to normal. I'd like to add my $.02 into the conversation about the whole CF issue.

Lets be realistic here all of us are painstaking aware that since the upgrade to CFMX, CF has become an overly bloated software that has several bugs particularly on the service level. However though when CF works, it works great. It allows an easy learning curve, and is able to produce powerful applications. I believe that the next major release of CF is due out around May. I've spoken to the guru himself, Ben Forta, about the next release and according to him, almost all of the issues in CF MX 6.1 will be fixed with Blackstone. I think that one of the major problems on why this happened in the first place is that Vortech only runs 1 CF server and by my guess hosts several hundred if not more clients on this box. CF MX is an extremely resource intensive application, and frankly I think that its riducolous that Vortech runs 30+ ASP/x servers and one cf. It is simply to much to ask of one server. As for our company... PHP sucks and is to confusing to work with. But ASP.net looks very promising. Plus it would be nice to actually have a real IDE for development instead of the craptacular Dreamweaver.

Oh yeah one thing that I forgot to mention also. If any of you have cfx tags instaled... you might want to check to make sure that they are working. I just noticed a few sites that rely on a tag that are producing errors because the a tag isn't registered.

One more opinion.

In spite of this problem I still believe that the folks are Vortech are the best. All the folks I have dealt with at Vortech during this problem have been super helpful and courteous. Never once did I sense anyone projecting that they were as frustrated as they must be. They all hung in there and worked everything out.

CFMX has problems, but when I read comments like go to PHP, drop CFMX. I am assuming that is frustration talking.

Some have put a lot of effort into developing CFMX applications. Applications that will put some Websites out of business if CFMX is dropped, or require a lot of work to revert back to CF5.

Having said all of that I will throw out a question. In case something similar happens again. Probably not original. I have no idea how workable, but we have to start someplace.

Apparently this sort of problem is beyond simply backing up and restoring. How about a script to re-configure. A script that emulates our setup processes.

Better ideas?
