99.9% Uptime = ????

What does 99.9% uptime actually equate to in ‘real terms’ – i.e. I’ve read a number of posts of WHT where members have stated that it equals about 43/45 minutes down time per month.

Anyone pretty good at maths here?

Here's an attempt:

given 24 hours per day,
60 minutes per hour = 1440 minutes per day.
30 days per month = 43200 minutes per month.

43200 * 0.999 = 43157 minutes uptime per month

So, to adhere to 99.9% uptime we need no more than 43 minutes per month downtime.

Good guess =)

That sounds about right.. As 99.9 is 7 hours in one year..

This does not count like reboots and stuff as they kind of have to be done on windows servers but unix servers should get higher then that even counting reboots if ever thing is going smooth.

Thanks for the clarification…

Therefore it also follows that under the 99.9% uptime guarantee as advertised by Matrix – that anything above 43/45 minutes of downtime qualifies for the ‘Or your money back bit’ ?

Well not counting reboots and things that must be done for any system.

But if a server is down due to network problem or server problems then yes.

TO be very clear on this read the "Downtime refund policy" here:

Thanks Brad, I’ve read that posting you referred to and a number of other members posts / replies concerning uptime.
The answers I’ve received here clarify it perfectly for me – all makes sense now
