Bean Counter

Doctors have concluded that if you find the man in the coffee beans in 3 seconds, your right half of your brain is better developed than most people. If you find the man between 3 seconds and 1 minute, your right half of the brain is developed normally. If you find the man between 1 minute and 3 minutes, then the right half of your brain is functioning slowly and you need to eat more protein. If you have not found the man after 3 minutes, the advice is to look for more of this type of exercise to make that part of the brain stronger!!!

This is bizarre - after you find the guy - it's so obvious. Once you find him - it's embarrassing, and you think, Why didn't I see him immediately?

And, yes, the man is really there!!!

Funny... I thought it was an April fools joke and spent more time googling it than I did looking at it. Once I read that there was really a man in the picture it took a few seconds. Oh... according to Google results and "truthorfiction.com", the scientific claims are unverified... but there is in fact a man in the picture. (Hint... very small.)

Only took a couple of seconds, however, I question this test. It needs to state what you are looking for. It's a man's head not a man. A real man's head not an image. That could throw many people. The description of what you are supposed to look for is given inaccurately. The sad thing is children should be taught w/ modalities in mind, but most places aren't, even tho you have to learn this quite early on to be a teacher.

Couple of seconds for me too.. what would be interesting to find out is of those who found it pretty quickly, what percentage of them are left handed? I am, and being a lefty you often do have strong right hemisphere function (it's not always the case, as hand dominance isn't just related to the whole left brain right brain stuff).

I saw it right off... once I quit drooling over all those java beans... and realized that it wasn't one of those 3D pictures you have to unfocus your eyes to see...

I'm pretty dubious on the claim that your right brain is faster. there are many factors in a searching task like this. For example, where do your eyes start? if someone says they can find the face in 3 seconds, they undoubtably started with their eyes near the region.

A more scientific task would be to show someone what they are looking for (the face), have them fixate on a point in the image, and then find out how long it takes them to find it.

(in case you're wondering why I care, I studied CogSci in college) ;-)

The fact that it takes some people minutes to find it pretty much excludes the possibility that they happened to just start looking at the right part of the picture first.

Look at the picture, firstly you can see the whole thing at once so you don't even actually need to really scan the image to find him. Now just scan the picture fairly slowly, top to bottom, left to right, that probably took you about 10 seconds. If you can't find it after scanning it 2 or 3 times, then in my opinion there is most definitely something related to the way your brain is processing the image not just pure luck that you looked right at where it is, your brain still has to interpret the image to find what it is your looking for. It's like those silly where's Waldo things, some people find them very very quickly, consistently, others well, some never find them heh.

Well, I originally posted the beans for fun, but we've seem to taken it to the analysis realm (gee, imagine that).

Now I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer . . . especially seeing it took me about 4 minutes to find the guy. However, I think it all depends on what your experiences in life are.

Me, I've done the "Waldo" thing. I started off looking for a "Waldo" sized guy (full bodied). Then that didn't work so I really got "smart" and figured the straight lines in the beans were lined up somewhere in the picture to spell "MAN". That didn't work so I figured maybe the texture of the beans spelled "MAN" if I looked from a distance. That didn't work and I threw up the BS flag and boom . . . I suddenly saw him sticking out there.

Just to muddy the water and give some thought to my point that it depends what your experiences in life are and what "in your mind" you are looking for when they say "a man" . . . I'll throw this out.

My youngest Son sees dolphins . . . my 14 year old Son just snickered. What do you see?

Uh yeah, Dolphins or whatever...

Seriously for the Beans thing, it would have been better to say "What's wrong with this picture" than to give the observer a head start on what to look for which involves misperceptions and pre-conceived ideas about what to look for.

The fact that the mans head is located at the bottom probably does more for the psychological profile than you might think... if you start scanning the picture from the top, left to right, it would take you longer to find it than it would if you started from the bottom and worked up... You might get lucky if you are one of those that can look at the whole picture at once and have it jump right out at you, but most will have to scan it in sections, even as small as it is... and depending on where you started and how many times you passed over it before seeing it would be where the real profile lies. Mucking up the waters with telling people what they are looking for really throws a wrench into the equation.
