mssql2 was brought up again some time before 10:00 EDT. Diagnosis: CPU fan failed, processor got fried. The machine is running on a single processor pending installation of a replacement CPU.

I love the smell of roasting circuit board in the morning...

not quite as good as roasted coffee .. a few too many toxins still in PCB's for me

Thanks for the info anyway, was that one of the new 2.4 Xenon boxes ? rare for a fan to fail that soon.

No, the unit is actually in a 1U case with AMD chips (both the exception to the equipment that we're currently deploying and keep in stock), which is why there was no spare at hand for either the fan or the CPU. Not the kind of thing you can dig up on short notice on a Sunday morning.

And you know how it is with AMDs... fan fails, they're toast before you can say "hey, what's that smell...?" :P

AMD chips
Ahh yes, that explains it then they sure do burn out within seconds of a fan failure

Cool Down with AMD!

May I make a suggestion to Craig and al as an ex AMD owner?

Why not buy Intel-based processors from now on?

They might be more expensive but they are much more reliable and more trouble-free.

You don't even have to buy a PIV. Even a good old Celeron is way more reliable than anything AMD can offer (Duron or Athlon).

I strongly feel that the server cluster at Vortech has been plagued with AMD instability and not because of a lack of skills.

Do yourself a favor: reduce the number of AMD in the park and you will reduce the number of maintenance problems.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've been running an AMD 1.4 at home now for over 2 years without one single hardware problem, running a dual-boot RH 8 and XP Pro without so much as a hiccup.

I am pretty sure all of the new servers have Dual Xeons. If I am wrong, Admin will correct.

Being as we are in the middle of a data center move, upgrades on the servers have been placed on hold until the move is complete.

What a joke AMD is. To have to open your computer to plud and unplug the hard disk to install an OS....Big joke.
Thats a motherboard issue dejump has nothing to do with CPU. And don't think just becuase ASUS has a reasonably good reputation that they don't make the odd crap board because they do !, in fact until recent years they had slipped right back on the quality control and were a board to avoid becuase of all the issues with them.

I run several AMD's and Intels and you wouldn't know the difference between them looking at their uptime or performance (if anything the AMDs are actually faster than their equivilent P4's)

By the way, your post implies that you swapped an AMD processeor for a Celeron in the same board ?, you can't do that that requires a new motherboard ! .. and if you swapped your motherboard well then there you go, like I said initially it was a motherboard problem not CPU.

hehe how can you say it was the CPU then if you swapped the motherboard

Celerons FWIW just don't cut it, fine for perhaps personal use but they don't have the on board cache to be able to cope with their bigger brothers in the business high-end processing arena.

Like I said not all ASUS board are reliable, we've had to RMA several of them becuase they were faulty.

This is the only dual AMD we have and it will be the last and only one..

I thought it would be a good idea for servers that did not need the power of the xeons but they are just darn hot..

I got the new 2400MP's for the server today and the fans so I will be replacing the one in it now and putting anther one in to replace the one that went bad the other night.. I just hope it did not mess up the board the chip looks fine so I might try and send back as well to get it replaced but I don't thinkt hey will since the fan went out..

I hate my 1.7GHz Celeron at work.
nothing is more annoying than clicking on links in IE and having to wait 3 secs for the windows to open (CPU usage is at 100%). Yes I do have tons of applications open, but my 2100 XP at home almost never goes to 100% usage (except games), with even more programs open than at work.
celerons are too weak IMHO.
