Need Image optimizer

I was wondering if anyone knows about a (free or very low cost) tool that can do very basic image optimization for the web. It would need to be able to resize (hopefully to pixel size), change resolution, select amount of colors for gifs, or compression for jpgs. Cropping would be nice, too. That's already it. Most free tools can do a lot of touch ups but not reduce images for web use. I found "Image Optimizer" from http://www.xat.com/io/ The user interface is not very intuitive and it cannot reduce the amount of colors for gifs. I would hate to clutter up my system by installing lots of other programs. So my hope is that this community has some insight?

Thanks a million,
obj

I don't know about selecting amount of color, but one product we've used for bulk resizing and optimization is PicSizer. Very free. It's at http://www.axiomx.com/picsizer.htm.
