I think it is about time Vortech pulled the plugs on this box. It's been too many issues with one box; has to be something to do with the mobo. Software cannot be repeatedly causing problems, especially if things have been loaded and re-loaded. Has to be some hardware chip intermittently causing disruptions. This is not the first time Unix16 has given problems and it has a reputation of being disruptive.

I'm totally fed up with all this. I was on cpanel2, which was a mess. I switched over to Hsphere and now am on unix16. Am I just unlucky or what?

Yeah, but it's a crap shoot and at $4 a pop could get old quick. Unix16 has been a problem for a while now and it's time to bite the bullet and do what ever has to be done to solve the problem. I've been a loyal customer since 2002 also but I'm beginning to get some critical sites that need to remain up and running. One I'm bidding on is a vaction condo reservation system and I know they can't afford or stand for excessive downtime. I may have to move my more critical clients to another host which I hate to do because of the great people here in our community. I mean where in the world are you going to find so many people helping people like Brangwyn and the rest of the crew. If you need to buy another server I'll donate the first 5 bucks!

I like the idea of installing a new box for unix16. The current box could then be overhauled in a non critical time frame and be used as a backkup or as unix20.

$5.00 surcharge is okay with me as one of my sites on unix16 is also a travel site.

Get we get a word from Vortech on this? I too will soon have a very critical site on this box, and I won't be able to afford the downtime. Normal downtime is acceptable, but this is not normal.

unix16 has already been replaced hardware wise, I will be speaking with james in a few min about him maybe downgrading it to 4.11 like the older boxes. This seems to be the only one on new hardware and freeBSD 5.x stable having an issue. It's really odd because it seems like hardware but we replaced ALL of it. So the last thing would be to downgrade the OS to an older version.

Sounds great, but since there is no backup server does that mean more downtime with unix16 offline while the downgrade takes place?

Can you let us know when it's been downgraded? Right now it seems to be working fine.

It's not something like a faulty switch port or cable then is it perhaps ? is the server actually dying, or just performing poorly ? .. was the PSU replaced?

James found the issue we think. It seems the scsi card on our supermicro board along with 2+ seagate 320 drives will case the system to crash. Dean is setting up a new box for unix16 with a tyan board and LSI scsi card and will just move the hard drives over to the new system. This "should" fix it. It took james about 4 hours to even find this issue on google and it's only with the scsi control that happens to be in our mother board and the Harddrives we use, and since we run 2+ per system.

If this new system and scsi card fix the issue we will look at some options. This does not seem to happen with ultra 160 drives just the newer seagate 320 drives.

Sounds like great news. Thanks for making this a priority. I feel better already.

unix16 is all replaced with new tyan and LSI SCSI card. So far no more crashing since the switch that I have heard of.

I will be ordering a few new scsi cards tomorrow for our new cases. We did not have any 1/2 hight scsi cards since we never needed them.

MY bet would be the SCSII cards combination with FREEBSD 5.0 version. ANyway, everyone (lots of us here) would heave a sigh of relief that the box has been over-hauled once again to resolve the issue. I would imagine the lesson to be learnt here is to be extra cautious when going for new combinations of hardware and OS versions.
