10/17/2003 NT26 and ASP pages
It seems there is a bug in MS jet DB after spending a lot of time on the phone with Microsoft today. If you have not seen it yet asp pages on NT26 do die from time to time.. Its about once every 5 to 7 hours for about 5 to 10 min or we catach it and restart it..
The bug seems to crash just "asp" pages with or with out a database. But its the ones with a database carshing it.. I am not sure if you use a system less DSN on this server if it will or not as I think it still uses the jet database to get to an access database.. Microsoft does not have a date for the fix yet, it seems they last updated there notes on 10/14/2003 as they were still working on a fix.. They said we could try downgrading to the version before but it may trash the system they did not know what it would do for sure.. ![]()

Ok I just found something MS did not seem to tell us about.
Date Published: 10/15/2003 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en We has SP7 and its the one having the issues. They said there was no fix but there is a SP8. So we have upgraded it to SP8 to see if that will fix the issue since it came out on the 15th and the last note he saw was the 14th.

It seems even with the SP8 it still wants to go down about every 8 hours. We have set the IPmon system to restart it if it sees it for down for more then 6 min. MS should have a fix here soon, I hope..

Yea I am trying, going to call MS on monday and get an update on it and see what we can do.. SP6 does not have this issue. But going back could cause other issues, like OS booting issues and that would be a lot worse..

Don't know if this sheds some light... it may be use of the ODBC Jet drivers that are causing the problem - MS recommends, as everyone really should be doing now, that the OLEDB connection standard be used instead of ODBC.
Quote from MS's support site: "When you run Microsoft Jet in an IIS environment, it is recommended that you use the native Jet OLE DB Provider in place of the Microsoft Access ODBC driver. The Microsoft Access ODBC driver (Jet ODBC driver) can have stability issues due to the version of Visual Basic for Applications that is invoked because the version is not thread safe. .... The native Jet OLE DB Provider includes fixes and enhancements for stability, performance, and thread pooling (including calling a thread-safe version of Visual Basic for Applications)." See: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;299973 If everyone stops using ODBC maybe things will improve. It's been a redundant technology (as far as ASP and IIS is concerned) for quite some time.

To Support: Assuming this incident wasn't scheduled maintenance, can we cet some idea what happened here? Was it a server crash to do with this ASP issue?

Yes it was only ASP antic, if you looked at the server status screen while it was down you would have seen only the ASP monitor was "red"

My site uses ASP scripts only and Access and SQL databases, and it is going to be hosted on the nt27.
Any problems there? |
