I've tried to access my databases using Enterprise Manager (a tool I use on a daily basis - so I'm very familiar with it), but when trying to list the databases, I just simply don't get a result. I connect to the server ok but can't get any further. I attempted last night 3 times, first time I waited 1 hour, no result - had to kill the task, 2nd time 40 mins, third time (running out of patience, 20 mins) - all to no avail. I tried again this morning thinking the server would have less of a load on it (I'm in Brisbane Australia), again to no avail. Each time I have to kill the process. I want to set-up Raindow Portal (.net webapp), and I have to execute a script against the database which will create the objects and set the permissions etc. I don't know how I can do this without using EM. I have downloaded EM.NET (C#), but even their web site says not to use it on production databases - it's only an alpha release. Well this is going to be a production db, in fact their will be several webs using several dbs (all production).
Can anyone tell me how I might be able to get connected. Yes, I read the other postings - I have MSSQL2K SP2 installed. I do not have any problem connecting to other service providers in the States running SQL2K. The databases do take a while to load - but over an hour without a result, that's ridiculous. This may in fact be the reason why people are sitting (sleeping) on connections in EM, because it takes forever to get to your database. Can any offer any help!? Please... this is most frustrating! Cheers from Brisbane Australia. Ed. Problem resolved - thought I would changed the frustrated smilie so people don't get the wrong impression from the post. What speed connection are you on ? I've never had more than a 5 minute wait on any of the 4 SQL Servers.
Apart from using the .NET EM to connect, or applying SP3 and seeing if that helps then I'm not really sure what other avenues you have open to you. If you just want to change databases then you could just script the changes and run them in QA instead, I know its not as convenient. I've not had a chance to try out mssqlXpress yet but someone told me it can be used to connect to MSSQL Databases as well. |

I have a 64Kbps (or 128Kbps if I choose) uplink and 128/256Kbps downlink on ISDN. I can connect to another hosting provider in the States (WebHost4Life) using EM without any problem. I still have a legacy app running there and would like to transfer them over to Vortech but...
I connect within seconds to the MSSQL2 server, but I haven't been able to get a list of databases ever. It always takes so long I lose patience and give up. I've tried using an analog modem to connect to the other SQL server mentioned and even with a sh!tty 33Kbps connection I still get on without incident. They have approx. 75 databases running on the server I am using. I will try downloading Service Pack 3, and see if it makes a difference. I will post back my findings. Thanks for the reply. It seems EM.Net may be my only choice. |

SP3 did the trick! Everything's cool now - I walked away from the PC for a few minutes and when I came back the DB list was populated. So it somewhere between 1 and 10 mins. That I can live with.
Thanks for your suggestions. |

Yea I wish MS would list only the DB you need.. Its really stupid that it lists them all..
Makes things a lot slower for everyone..

I agree!!! I thought there was a way to set up a connection to just the one database of interest... I have either forgotten or it was a SQL server 7 feature. I too have experienced the lag in displaying the available dbases... it is NOT a unique issue to Matrix.

It is possible... but need login own the database
![]() If you are de dbo, EM only list your database. This point I cannot understand yet... why I cannot be the DBO of my databases? yes, I red others threads about security on db size.... but not sure at all.... Others porviders allow to be dbo without problem. only a opinion... |

You can have DBO you just need to ask us for it so we can turn it on and add you the list of users with it to know who we keep an eye on.
