Angry Problem sending EMail via Outlook / Express

One of my users has been using Outlook Express for the past several weeks. Yesterday (Saturday), OE began displaying a pop-up wndow requesting "Please enter your user name and password for the following server". It displays the server name (mail.jmh.cc), and wants a username & password to be entered.

At first, I thought they must have done something to OE to break it, but I cannot make it work using my system either. I even created a test account as the only mail account in OE, but the darned window keeps popping up.

I have the "My Server Requires Authentication" option checked, and start out with the "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" option checked (radio-buttoned, etc). After the pop-up window, OE has changed the authentication method to "Log On Using Account Name / Password", but entering correct info there does not work either.

The strange part is that OE IS able to access the mail server to retrieve mail, but cannot SEND mail... therefore, the server designation, user name and password seem to be accepted for read (but not write) access. Both Outlook Express and Outlook (full version) exhibit this problem.

I personally use a different EMail client (Forte Agent), and it works flawlessly with the same server (although authentication for sending EMail usually takes 30-45 seconds).

I had the same OE problem when I first started with Matrix, but the problem fixed itself when they fixed another problem with the server. I remember reading a message a few days ago from someone else about this problem, but cannot remember where...

Any ideas? Suggestions? Fixes?

Thanks!

I have to disable the outgoing server authentication in order to send mail through Matrix's mail server. I believe they have that feature disabled, and attempting to authenticate outgoing mail will cause the re-authenticate dialog to appear. That should help...

Ditto... disabling the server authentication is what works for me as well.

Thanks, everyone! Disabling authentication seems to be the key to making Outlook Express happy.

Just curious... does it take your system 30-45 seconds to sign onto the mail server & get authorization to send mail?

(Maybe something ELSE needs changing?)

Thanks!! ... joe

I am checking on this problem I think it can be fixed very easy.. It has been doing this to me for some time. I thought it was just my darn Eudora messing up again so thought nothing about it..

I have server authentication disabled, and everything sends/recieves fine, but every so often (every hour or two) one of my accounts will pop-up a window asking for the username/password. The fields are pre-polulated, so I click okay and everything goes through fine. This has only been happening during the past 2 months. I'm on Outlook 2002. I don't know if this is related to what you're talking about or if it's just a Microsoft problem.

Admin,

I'm not sure what you did, but whatever it was, THANKS!!

Authentication to send zips right through now. I sent several test messages thinking that they hit the bit bucket, it was so fast!

I may still be having a problem with an account or two using OE, but will have them upgrade to OE6 (same version as I am using with great luck) before posting a ticket or BB message.

Thanks!

... joe

Theoddity, I also have weird luck with Outlook and OE. Besides the occasional password alert, It takes anywhere from 20 - 45 seconds to send and receive mail.

The send and receive mail should be fixed now.
