I'm really surprised you guys aren't blocking this server at the router until it's completed the restore, having the server still available from the outside is probably really hurting the recovery time, IMO we don't need default pages to be served to customers, I'd rather it just didn't respond at all and you trim potentially several hours off the restore process by blocking it off at the router until it's done.

There are three restore streams going and there really doesn't appear to be much of an impact having IIS enabled. Getting people online and showing them progress is being made is worth a few extra minutes.

We dont have any site on this server, but I know this very good; and I hate to see these things.

just wish that all things get back to normal very soon. and wish that we could have some REAL backup like RAID 5 on all servers.

If you can recall correctly, every response to your emails was a request asking politely for your username. You even stooped to calling me names, rather than supplying your username. Within 10 minutes of providing your username, you had an explanation and a link to this thread.

Update ? I have some site folders back in my FTP directory but nothing in there ? Do i need to try and recover the sites myself now or do I have to still wait for the files to come back as part of the restore process ?

This is running into a second day now and my client is really pi$$ed so I could do with a timescale ASAP!

Thanks

The restore is up to letter N. This box had some users with a ton of sites with really tiny files.

I still get an error when trying to publish in MS FrontPage 2003: Unable to access the file "service.lck". Please check file permissions.

This is for my "A" and "I" sites (I assume the "W" site has not been restored yet). I wrote a ticket on this but was referred back to this thread. I've already run "fix extensions" from the control panel. Now what should I do?

Possibly, but remember you don't have the benefit of SCSI on this box either, no proper NCQ, and definitely not 15k RPM's + low seek times (the 7200.8's have NCQ but so far from the testing I've seen done it's no where near as effective as true SCSI comman queueing) actually the 7200's have a slower than average seek as well coming in around 11ms from memory.

Just saying really that every thing other than copying files that the drives have to do, does add time to it all, even it it's just 25ms per request, it adds up over the 20+ hours this is going to end up taking.

Latest update!

Files are still being restored, folks. I cannot change permissions for you on demand or anything else specific to single accounts yet, so please do not submit any tickets asking for this. When the files are completely copied over, I will begin the changeall user permissions scripts and set everything up for read/write and FrontPage, etc. Please be patient, there is nothing that can be done to speed this process up any quicker than it is already taking.

When the situation is all clear, we will make the announcement declaring it so. Once we get to that point, you can submit tickets for individual modifications to user(s) webspace if it applies to anything on NT38.

Also one addtional note, since this seems to be a popular question to ask...

We are still on letter "S" in A-Z file restorations, and have been for over the past 2 hours.

So in a nutshell this is going to take the rest of today to complete the restore which as a result is almost 2 days of downtime for my customers who are looking for blood and there is absolutely nothing I can do as an interim measure ?
