*Emergency Update* Cisco Switch Down Time

Hello

During a recent audit of our Network Configuration, we have found some of our Cisco switches are running an older IOS. We have done the necesarry testing and replaced one last night.

Tonight September 14th 2005 at 11pm ET we will be upgrading all of our switches to the latest IOS. Total downtime per switch is 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes total.

We want to keep the network secure so this an emergency update to our switchs.

Sorry about the short notice.

10 switchs in total I think not the core switch as that is extreme networks no cisco. We will do one at a time so if we run in to an issue we can fix it. We also have spare switchs on hand just incase something nutty happens.

We are starting to reboot the switches right now... You may notice servers going down and up in groups. We will do one cabnet per time and will not go to the next until we have all cabnets running...

We did an aduit and noticed we needed to get our cisco switches updated, not something we have to do very offten last time we did this on all switchs was about 2+ years ago. There have been security holes in the older version so we wanted to be sure all the switchs were as safe as we could make them. The only thing your clients might notice from this upgrade is the switchs not getting hacked if it had happend.

We have a little bit more switch work to do this month spliting stuff up in to better vlans. When we do that that will speed the over all network up even more in side the network and out.

Please seriously consider moving all of the Nameservers OFF the same switch (Nagios seems to indicate they are setup that way).

If this switch goes down it's effectively going to appear to all customers as if the entire network is unreachable due to the DNS not being available.

Nope NS and NS2 are on one switch and power grid and NS1 and NS3 are on another.

Everyone uses NS and NS1 or NS2 and NS3 so it's safe. We did this when we had a small power issue before.
