You know Dean, just a suggestion here, I know that this would take you folks longer, but if you mirrored the disk first and set it to read only, then the sites would not be down right now.

I say this because we are now getting into the business day and at least NT3 is showing no signs of life yet.

By using the mirror technique, we developers can at least have information displayed for people instead of a DNS error that looks like the site is gone.

NT16 is up to 31% on the defrag. NT31 is at 6% (it has quite a bit more drive space). NT3 is finishing up check disk on stage 5 of 5 and NT7 is still on stage 4 of 5. The longer check disk runs on these servers, the more obvious it is that these hard disks really needed this extra attention.

I second this or any other solution that can make this kind of maintenance more transparent for end users. Please consider the options before going ahead with the next batch.

Red face next batch?

Umm, at this point I probably wouldn't do another batch, regardless of if it was or wasn't scheduled. I think it has taken maybe a bit longer then expected, Maybe next time around doing this you should only start at 2:00 A.M. and only do a few at a time through a week of early mornings. That way this won't creep into the next day of business so much. *For those of you outside the US, well this stinks no matter how you dice it. But in general I think it's worse for off for more users when it starts creeping into the past 7 or 8 A.M. period and it's almost 11:00 A.M. now.

Just an observation though, I'm sure it was really needed though, as you said, especially since it's taken so long.

NT16 is up to 42%. NT31 is at 12%. NT3 has started defragging and is up to 19%. NT7 is working on stage 5 of the check disk.

Unfortunately I do not have an ETA since we've never done this. It is all highly dependent on the size and condition of the disk. From the look of it, NT31 is going to take a while. NT3 is speeding right along and I would estimate that it should finish within the next couple hours.

Will we be able to get credit back for all of this downtime?

Will I be able to get credit back for all of this downtime on nt31, because of the fact that it has already been way past 6 hours?

If I were down a week, I wouldn't waste my time posting on this forum. I would have already moved on to another hosting company.

NT16 is at 44%. It is moving slower because it only has a single large drive, rather than two smaller drives that can be defragged at the same time. NT3 and NT31 are both done with their system drives and are well into their home drives with 34% and 23% respectively. NT7 is still check disking, but it is making progress.
