If your in the us and you have a icensed or official business (i.e registered with county, Inc, LLC, etc) then a real merchant account is the way to go.

If your not, or just a start up then those payment companies are not so bad until you can get a real merchant account.

Paypal is $49 per year, 3.79 per transaction and .50 batch fee, thats actually cheaper than Ikobo if they charge 1.50 fee to txfr $ to your card each time and they hold your money.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions guys, I signed up with ikobo after some more research. I would like to thank Silverbug for the link he's provided, it's been very helpful in my decision-making process.
Regarding paypal, it may be cheaper than ikobo, although ikobo doesn't charge every time you transfer money to your ikard. It only charges when you withdraw the money and it's a fixed amount, regardless of the sum being withdrawn.... or so they say.

and the fact that you get a card you can use to withdraw money is a bonus. The other thing is that you dont need to register with ikobo to make a payment like you do with paypal.

I like the idea of an atm card to withdraw funds. Luck for me LaSalle bank does that free with my checking account.

glad you found something that works for you. good luck.

Please correct me (indeed I'm sure someone will) if I'm way out in left field here, but neither of these statements reflect the account I have with PayPal. There used to be a need for people to register just to make a payment, but that's been gone for a few months now. Also, there are no setup or ongoing fees of any kind. The only fees I pay for anything are as follows:

2.9% + $0.55 Canadian per transaction.
2.5% exchange fee if changing between currencies.
$0.50 to transfer balances less than $150 to my bank account. ($150 and over are free)

From what I can tell, eBay is having a very positive effect on PayPal now that they're the same company, and it's to the point where I'm actually willing to trust it for my business (however small it may be). I'm aware of their horrible history, but it appears that they're turning the corner at this point.

For those who are in the market, it might be worth checking http://www.merchantcompare.com/ before signing up somewhere. They don't have every possible merchant provider listed, though it'll certainly at least get you started.

Curt,

Those statements caught my eye as well. The way you are describing it more closely matches the way I have found PayPal to work.

Yep, you're right. I also noticed you don't have to sign up, you just click that big yellow button thingy on the website.

Lucky you, huh? Thanks for the good wishes, I'll keep you posted on how things evolve, maybe someone else can learn from my experience.

Yeah, I read about recent improvements that have taken place at ikobo lately. I suppose this is one of them.

Yeah Paypal hasn't required registration for a while now, it's actually still imo one of the most convenient processors out there. Can't beat $1 for transferring the funds to your bank account and its usually always there in 3 business days (you'll find those places that give you an ATM card will probably chomp at least $3-$5 off each withdrawl transaction)

I would recommend using Paypal + some other card processor like 2checkout, bcos I have come across many people who hate paypal (various reasons can be found here: http://www.paypalsucks.com) and want other payment options.

Always keep an extra credit card processing account ready to take orders as a backup, just in case (speaking from experience). I use: 2checkout.com

It's easy to open an account and the charges are reasonable, no need of any monthly activity and no monthly charges. Their new system is great and support is also good.

It is nice, but so far I don't have a bank account and even I did I couldn't use paypal. In ikobo's case the ATm withdrawal fee is only a flat 1.99$. I doesn't sound too bad for me...
