I just found a copy of this document, which I was first shown by its author some time early in '97. For everyone who wonders how networking is really done and how your packets get from A to B this is a must read.

Nice... I will have to share that to my students...
on a almost serious note... for a basic (very) understanding of networks... download one of the movies at the following site http://www.warriorsofthe.net/ seriously, I show this to a group of students at the beginning of a Network+ class and it really helps them out with the basic concepts that other people take for granted.
